Dam aol 56 k. I cant play online, OR be trained by a master all because of aol's ****ty 56k. I should have expected this though :( Can anyone help me? I'm close to convincing my parents to get me dsl/cable, but they said the cost has to even out.

22 a month for AOL

22 a month for extra phone line for my AOL

DSL/CABLE=50 a month

it is close enough i guess. but i have a few questions

1.How does a cable modem work? does it need a phone line? how much do we have to pay to install it? are ALL services 50 a month?

2.Same question but put DSL instead of cable ^^^

3.Which is better? DSL or Cable? Why?

4.Think I should switch? Is it worth it?

Thanks :lsduel:

1.) A cable modem is just that! A modem that works off of a fiberoptics cable wire. Although you don't need a phone line you will need a cable wire. You might have cable but I think you need a seperate line for your cable modem, so theres the instalation cost. You also need a network card...

2.) No clue on dsl...

3.) Dsl is generally considerd faster, but I think it costs alot more...

4.) Multiplayer is great so I think its worth it. Anyway I think we could always use another non-bs whore player, and you might be able to find one that less then 44 dollars a month or one that gives a discount for having a cable service w/ them and having a cable modem with them, if you hav cable.

DSL is also really unstable if you're hosting something...such as a multiplayer server. It'll disconnect the clients a random very frequntly. So cable is probably the best way to go, i'm still using 56k myself though, i'm just speaking on the behalve of most others.

i only pay 7 a month for it and cable is 75 a month here... its not worth the extra loot though, not for me.. i'm fine with my 200-300 pings ;)

The main diference between cable , and DSL is that DSL has very fast upload, and download capabilities, usually several mega bites per second.

Cable on the other hand has the same download speed as DSL(recieving) , but can only upload at 128kbs. Normally cable is cheaper than DSL, depending on where you live.

Cable internet companies limit upload capacity so that no one will run servers off their computers, and hog up band width. That's why cable is usually cheaper. I have never been able to run a gaming server with cable that didn't have huge amounts of lag...so I don't bother.

But for general purposes, and not running any servers, I think cable is great, especially since I can't get DSL where I live.

You will get very low pings with cable, and also with DSL. If your planning on running a server....you will need DSL. DSL should not be unreliable, if someones DSL is unreliable then there is something wrong with thier service.

Also, you will need a network card regardless of which type of service you choose.

I'm looking into a cable myself.

The first time I went online with my 56k it was ok. I won the match (go me!!) but when I tried to get on later, the lag was too bad. I was jumping all over the screen, appearing over holes and everything.

You need a cable or faster :)

Well in my area (bc canada) dsl is much better for gaming than cable, the pings are alot lower and there is no problems running a server like someone else mentioned. It's even $5 cheaper a month than cable, all my friends switched over. :)

The really cool thing about dsl is that it never slows down, you have your own seperate bandwidth. With cable you have to share your bandwidth with other users on your network, which causes congestion at certain times of the day.

Really, it all depends on where you live. The one thing that you need to make sure to do is get a reputable provider. If your getting cable I've heard good things about RoadRunner. As far as DSL is concerned I have DirecTV and it works great. Also, DSL is mor widely available than cable so you might be stuck with just DSL as an option depending where you live. Hope that helped :biggs::jawa
