Creating caps question

I read Spacemonkey's tutorial and he describes ways to create the caps with extruding edges etc.

Do you have to do it this way? Or is it OK to close the end of a limb with polys and to just detach these polys?

 

Besides that I want to puty a skin on them? I made a nice bloody one

that sounds pretty much what he suggested, although im not sure how your going to add these polys, but as long as it gives the same end result it doesnt matter how you do it, its just finding the most convenient way to do it is best.
