tubbydrmmr
I have a perfectly good 13.3" laptop screen still connected to a broken/parts laptop. I would like to be able to use the screen if I could. I read some time ago somewhere online about someone converting a laptop LCD for use as a normal display with a desktop. Any one ever done this? Anyone know anything? Faye Ying
i did it for my freind but we had an existing 17" lcd panel for reference we took it apart to examine you need to make sure eveyrthing is connected properly and you gotta buy something to put between the existing cables. i forgot what it was. htis was a year or so ago. he currently has the laptop lcd hanging on his wall was a monitor to allow 100% desktop space i'll see if ic an get reference photos for you
tubbydrmmr
Awesome...if you can remember anything from your experience that would help me, that would be totally great. Those Ref. Photos will hopefully help out BIG time!!!
Faye Ying
i'ma ctually talking to him on the phone as i'm typing this up. he's looking for the 3 pics we took of the mess we made of the room. those are the only pics we initially had. might be able to see some of the wiring in the background. as for actual pics of the thing itself, we'll ahve to take it apart and he doesnt' wanna risk messing it up the sepearate peice i remember now is to change the voltage and amperage of the cables, since the LCD uses alot less power. and trying to feed in the amount of power coming from your wall power jacks could very well melt the screen. you'll also need to salvage some parts from the laptop connectors itself as well. tubbydrmmr
ok...that all sounds good but I still don't kinda know exactly where to start. Do you have any more info that you could give me? Thanks for your input so far
Faye Ying
i'll get back to you on this later in the week or seomthing i dont' want to give you soemthing off the top of my head and risk melting your screen, zapping you with electricity, setting fire to your house, or what not. tubbydrmmr
Cool...thanks a lot, Faye Ying. I'll be periodically checking the thread. In the meantime, if anyone else has anything to contribute, please do...the more info - the better:D
Faye Ying
no prob. i might do this too. see if anyone has a large 15" one and make it to save some desktop space. a 17" trinitron looks nice but takes up too much space Originally posted by tubbydrmmr In the meantime, if anyone else has anything to contribute, please do...the more info - the better:D i agree with tubby. just in case if anything bad happens, i can't take full blame :D:D
tubbydrmmr
So Faye, did you get some more info???
Faye Ying
i just remembered you needed to keep alot of the stuff from the laptop such as the controller chip that runs the lcd, the power supply if you can, to save the hassle. recharging it is a different matter, might wanna keep the wriing so you can plug in the adapter still. and kinda run it straght through the laptop if you want to not alot, i'm wondering why the cars leaking motor oil. half the motor is covered in a film of it, and the underside of the hood has a big spray stain
tubbydrmmr
Ouch...sounds like there is some engine trouble, eh? I had a huge engine "problem" last year... I have a 1980 blaze orange pickup truck that I blew out the engine on. It was a power company truck...so it had a rough life...until my dad bought it. Anyway, I got in it one day, started it and the next thing I heard was this huge cracking sound and then bang...my engine started to shudder and rev and coolants were pouring out of the engine. I quickly turned off the motor and went to inspect...there was a river of engine fluids streaming down my driveway and a hole in the side of the engine big enough for me to stick my hand into. And the best part was, I was on my way to a gig (i am a drummer, hence "tubbydrmmr")so all my drums and everything were packed into the back. I had to quickly unpack and find another ride AND try to clean up my "hazardous" spill on the driveway...what a nightmare!!! We got a new/rebuilt engine for the truck and I am still driving it today...it is a great truck. Anyway, just thought I would share that with you...I had an urge:p So, I have the controller chip from the laptop, but I don't have the laptop power supply. Also...you have given me a lot of good info...but I am still not exactly sure where to start. Do I need a vga monitor cable? Other materials? Where do I start on the LCD screen? I guess it would be helpful if I had a existing lcd screen to look at like you guys did...I unfortunately don't though.

You might have just blown an gasket. If so, just put new ones in.
TKMaim
Here's where I'd start (if you don't mind me butting in).... Find out the model number of your LCD screen, and see if you can find some tech specs on the net. Next, get yourself a variable power supply(usually available at RatShack ) something like a 4.5V-12V. Also make sure you have an available vga cable.... Now follow the spec sheet which should have a wiring diagram for the output.... Please be careful not to electrocute yourself as I don't want to be responsible for something like that.... Another good spot on the net might be some of the case modding boards. Someone there may have more concrete directions....
