jaybiggspr
Ok. The first map I ever made was with a little program called Alchemy (for Doom, Doom2, Heretic, etc...). I though map making was the best thing since sliced bread. I made tons of maps for doom 2. Now that games have gone fully 3D, it seems that people who dont know how to use 3DStudio Max or AutoCAD programs are ****e out of luck. I'm familiar with how textures work (sort of) and stuff like that but when it comes to making the map, do I need to be a C++ master or have a degree in Math or something?? Where is the user-friendliness? Granted, I havent tried JKIIRadiant or anything but something tells me that as soon as I load it up, I'll be like a dog in a fire hydrant factory; I wont know what to do. I just hope there is an easy way to make maps for these "Next Generation" games. Any beginners tips or tricks of the trade?
UniKorn
The only tip I can give is : play around with jk2radiant, test some stuff, and at a given moment there's gonna be a switch in your head that will go from 0 to 1. That's when you start to think in 3D. You don't need to know 3DS to map stuff.
jaybiggspr
Thanks for the tip Where can I get JKIIRadiant?
Takeoffyouhoser
i'd get both GTK radiant 1.2.9 and JKRadiant first. They both have their better points. I do lighting in JkRadiant as well as compiling, but do all my building in GTKRadiant. Rich's Tutorials are pretty good, and you can get them here, http://richdiesal.jedioutcastmaps.com/tutorials/ Rich's first few lessons are pretty good, but, the more advanced stuff is written/showed a bit tricky to me... I was blown away editing this game because I was used to Duke Nukem's editor. All you need to remember is that you build everything like Lego's. Thats he easiest way to describe this stuff. If someone told me this in May, i'd be done by now!!! Drawing things out on paper helps too, until you get new ideas, start over and , well, you get the idea...lol All in all, It really isn't that bad game to edit. Single player stuff takes forever though!!

That's because the material itself is a bit tricky. The basics of mapping really aren't all that difficult - it's just following rules. But once you get past that, the learning curve is pretty steep. Just keep at it and don't be afraid to experiment and you should be fine.

alienprotein
After you play with Radiant a bit, you will get the feel. The second best thing you can do is use this forum. I have been on many a forum, and this forum has a bunch of great people helping out all us noobs. Best forum I have been on in a long time. Thanks to all. Its good to know that there are not a bunch of mapping snobs on this forum. Also!!!!! Use Rich's tutorial's. They will get you off in the right direction. patchx
making maps is easy as hell spend your spare few hours for a day or 2 reading tuts (havent read rich's but theyre probably kewl) and then start making stuff i read some of bubba's tuts\ ( http://planetquake.com/bubba/mapping.html ) and started using all the things i learned in a practice level i thought i was doing and that level turned into my tavion sp level (which though somewhat buggy in places is pretty kewl for a first go...i think anyway) the important thing if ur making sp maps is too use area portals and hint brushes, i keep downloading sp maps that look kewl but run like crap cause no-one used areaportals in 'em which is a shame when the author obviously put lots of effort into them -patch
