Sky boxes

Ok I have been going through the post and following links to all the diffrent tutorials:

Which by the way it is great you guys have taken the time to create these to help everyone out. But I still am not grasping the concept of sky boxes. I have been playing these types of games for awhile and am now getting intrested in the mapping end of it and have a ctf map pretty close to finished but i am still working out some problems i have. But the bigest problem i have is the skybox and how it works so the map looks like it is in an actual enviroment. If some one knows of a detailed explination somewhere i would really appreciate it.
