Wakka Bongo
I'm Trying To Learn How To Model, And I'm Useing Milkshape And That Tutorial From The Milkshape Homepage That Says "For Bloody Newbies" By Josh And I Still Can't Get It Right. I Think I Might Go Use Gmax, What Do You Guys Think. There's Still Plenty I Need To Know However, Maybe Ya'll Can Help: 1. What's A Tag? 2. How Do I Model For The JKII Skeleton? 3. Is Gmax Better Than Milkshape? 4. How Many Poly's Can A JKII Model Have? Any Help Would Be Deeply Appreciated.
sithlord-II
1) a tag is a basic triangle used to identify certain parts of the model, perhaps for collision, located in specific parts of the model - some are used for designating where a weapon is held - such as bolt_r_hand tag 2)all you have to do, to model for the JK2 skeleton, is create your model sized approximately close to the original JK2 skeleton. For reference look at the JK2 model XSI files or GLM files you can open in milkshape. You might want to break the model into parts as described in Tim "spacemonkey" appleby's guide for dismemberment 3) well, its based off of 3d studio max 4, and max is probably in some ways a more powerful 3d modeling program, however max is also much more expensive. Gmax however is free. Milkshape can model for alot of games and only costs what, 20 bucks? 4) a jk2 model can have basically as many polys as a comp can run without crashing - the mesh parts may not have more than 500 vertices i believe, or 1000 polys, so its best to break each part into bits if it starts to get up that high. a good figure to stick with is a max of around 3000, but you can go as low as you like for whatever model you make, if you want 1000 or so , why not? personally, i would recommend using GMax, but that is because i use max and am used to it. sithlord-ii
SilentMobius
Well sithlord said it all, but I just thought it was important to mention that while you can use milkshape or gmax to design a model, there is currently no way to get that model into the game without 3DS Max. CoRnDogg
Well... I'm pretty new at this whole thing, and I'll show you what helped me out a lot. http://www.btinternet.com/~howe_alison/brothers/tutorial/gmax_jkii_tutorial.htm This tut is pretty in depth. It requires gmax though. Try it out.

Aparantly $3495 but whats $495 between friends Y'see I didn't want to beat around the bush, after all slaving over a mesh for days only to find out and the end you can't get it in game would be IMHO quite disheartening. Discreet's target market is professional 3d artists, acquiring Max in the modding community is less a case of money and more a case of personal morality.
