What I mean is that there are a lot of maps released but most of them suck. You can't spend your time downloading maps that can be up to 12 megs and it really sucks with a 56k modem. Your go insane trying to download EVER map!

So look at the screenshots and the description and decide if it seems good - it's fairly easy to tell if a level is complete crap, and although you'll probably end up downloading some lemons, at least you're not downloading ALL of them.

So ppl should stop maping cause you dont have the bandwidth to download them all?

Aside from that these things take a lot of work, no way would you be able to

get ppl not to release them. They have a right to be proud of their hard work

even if it isnt up to your exacting standards.

If most ppl didnt make a few mediocre maps and release them for public

use (and comment) there is no way most of them would even learn

-or at least have the dedication to learn- how to make good ones.

I think its kinda like: whats the point in you having made this post.

well anyways people map because they want too , they think its fun, so when they finish they release it and people download it and hopefully have fun with it...you know you don't have to download every map out there , like someone said you pick the ones that interest you...but if it wasn't for people mapping then you'd be stuck with the default levels ..so I wouldn't be complaining about the number of maps available to play.;)

any tips on low file size volthrax?

keep custom textures to as minimum sizes as possible. if you have access to photoshop, save as jpg using baseline optimized compression at 10. (yeah i know it's large file, but it's the good quality and it works well with JO). i mean size-wise you should try to keep them within the 256x256 to 512x512 range. you really have no need for a 1024x1024 texture unless it's for a skybox or whatnot

try to either use music from the game or small loops. cuts down considerably.

just some of the things you can do.

Maps are very small if you don't include any textures. Stick to the base textures that come with the game and your maps should be well under 1 meg unless they're truly massive.

A 1.5 meg bsp compresses to around 300k, and that's with around 550 brushes in use.
