In case you aren't it is software that tells someone personal info without your cinsent, It is included free of charge with kazaa, and half the cookies websites try to put on your computer. To remoze it download Ad-Aware.

No, I had a rough idea of what it was, just needed a fuller explanation. Thanks.

Free programs these days are notorious for containing spyware, and spyware cookies (like doubleclick) are all over. Lavasoft Adaware is a great program that can remove them (especially the annoying "Gator" and "GAIN" variants). Also cleaning out your cookies folder once a day is a good idea.

Spam sucks...

Several free media players contain spyware, so if you use anything other than Windows Media Player or Winamp it has a good chance of including spyware. One program actually will remove Ad-Aware from your system when you install it. Also Kazaa has spyware, which can be removed be downloading Kazaa Lite. Aside from pop ups and paranoid people who think Windows XP has spyware thats all I can think of.

yeah people are getting crazy with stealing credit cards and such, just last week my sister wrote to us about her boyfriends credit card, heres what happened

greg (my sis's bf) used his credit card a fair while ago in montreal, someone took some kind of scanner and found whatever it is they needed to know to access his account from an atm. and then not long ago, whoever this thief was decided to place an empty envelope in an atm and say that he/she was depositing 1200 dollars, he/she then withdrawed that amount despite the account not containing that much, fortunatly for greg hes been treeplanting out in western canada for the past month so he can prove he wasnt in montreal and that he couldnt have done the crime.... what is the world coming to?

Well, they say whenever you fill out any forms, you should always clear your browser cache, autocomplete and cookies and history and all that... otherwise somebody with access to your computer could extract the info... even log the keystrokes if they were monitoring (so keep your antivirus and firewall software up to date!). You can usually choose to use "secure forms" on those sites, but the level of encryption varies (say 56 bit or 128 bit, etc, the higher the better).

Chances are, you won't ever be hacked (unless you have a lot of computer-savvy enemies, or you're rich), but you can never be too careful. What's more likely is that you'll get spyware and get spammed as a result, or get random virii sent to you in your email (especially if you use outlook or hotmail, blah).

I'd say it's probably more likely that you'd get your CC # stolen if you shop over the phone with it than if you shop with it on your own personal computer, but be careful.... it always pays to take precautions. I don't use a CC to shop online, anyhow... most of the time a bank debit card or money order will work just as well (and those aren't perfect either, but less risky than a CC in most cases).

Incidentally (and I'd have to search Slashdot for the actual article) didn't Microsoft admit that Media Player 8 had built in spyware recently? Another reason I was glad I didn't commit to using WinXP... ; p
