Wes Marrakesh Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 ok... i have put in areaportals, sealing an area (although it has windows...) and the walls are structural... two questions: areaportals need to be detail or structural, and why do i get this error: WARNING: areaportal_(#) does not touch two areas when as far as i can tell it does.
monsoontide Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 I could be completely wrong, but as I understand it, you can't have windows (Detail brushes) as part of the walls of the area you wish to seal with an area portal (Cos detail brushes don't block the VIS process) - thus your error. You can have windows within this section though. Try removing the windows and see if it helps. Don't forget to check out RichDiesels tutorial on the subject for some helpful pointers on area portal placement. Hope this helps. Sorry if the info isn't right - again try Rich's tutorials Monsoontide.
Wes Marrakesh Posted July 31, 2002 Author Posted July 31, 2002 OK... on one side i have a hallway with windows. on the other side i have a room with a window. in between is a wall that has no glass and is structural. that help? areaportal is in the doorway and do areaportals need to be detail?
fourwood Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 Leave areaportals as structural, make sure you dont have any leaks in multiple areas of your map, and make sure you can't see from one room into the next. If there are windows between the 2 rooms you have an areaportal between, it won't work.
Wes Marrakesh Posted July 31, 2002 Author Posted July 31, 2002 thx... and i assume that measn you can't areaportal windows? i thought that it only drew what was behind it when you had a direct LOS...
Xzzy Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 no that's not how areaportals work. If you want to do that you need to use hint brushes, which even then may not work but it would at least do something. Areaportals are hard breaks in the map that force the q3 engine to not draw anything on the other side of the portal until the door is opened. Since you can't do that with a window, not only does an area portal not work on that window, it will probably break any other area portals in the room.
Wes Marrakesh Posted August 1, 2002 Author Posted August 1, 2002 AAHHH.... so i should hint brush windows?
Xzzy Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 well, no. If you want to use areaportals you'll have to get rid of the windows completely. Or redesign your map in a fashion where the map is "sealed" tight enough that a window never causes a leak that will break an areaportal. Hint brushes don't block vis, they simply enable the game to create portals beyond which the player may not be able to see.
