Yun the Sith
OK I need some tips here. I want to make a canyon level. I don't think the ground will be that hard, but I need some help with the walls. Can anybody give me some tips to make rough-loking walls?
keto
i assume canyon walls would have the same look but when i make mountanous walls i use a prefab that i created a while ago. its quite simple to make: make 4 brushes, all equal height and thikness to give them a canyon wall feel. put them all pretty close to each other, select them all and hit "e" for edge manipulation. you basically want to create a ^^^ look to it by grabing the back edges up so that they are slanted. varying to make it not look to stereotypical. (note: you can use mroe than 4 to get a more unique feel) then dupelicate the 4 and put on each side, tweak the edges so that they line up at the edges if you duplicated a lot of them in a row. for more detail i usually layout the entire wall area then dupelicate the walls move them forward a little bit then down so that you have a: ._/ / sort of look to them. on top of that you can add little ledges again by edge manipulating a brush to look like a trapezoid from a birds eye view and an upside down right triangle from the side view. (with no visual aids it a little hard to explain but i hope you got it) to make the edges look a little more realistic use the Shift+Ctrl face selection to give the florr part of the ledge a different texture hope this helps, and remember that this is just the way that i choose to do it, others may have better ways and i encourage you to just mess around with clipping to see if you can come up with a good way for yourself. -keto
Takeoffyouhoser
you can spend 6 weeks learning terrain like i did...lol...
Catscratch
Or you can teach him how to use Easygen right eh? :P:D
Takeoffyouhoser
yah I could.....and I will.. http://www.planetquake.com/6thfloor/ezgen/MBtutorial.html Read this tutorial a few times first.... use the link to download EasyGen on the first page...its blue, can't miss it!! Just remember that you can only use 1 texture to create terrain in Jedi Outcast and SOF2.... It seems that JO and SOF2 DO NOT support Alpha shaders, which let you blend textures... You also only need to save the .map file too. Don't worry about Alpha shaders or meta shaders.... just worry about the .map file... Also, make sure you save it in the your base/map folder... then load it up in editor and your off !
Spoon_Gouge
Hey hoser! I've read a few of your post and your conquest of easygen. Can you help me out? I'm experimenting now, and I'm almost there, but not quite. I've got it so I'm using the right calk but I'm still not getting the right terrain texture. The system/terrain texture is where it belongs, but it's clear and I can se all the caulk walls of the terrain beneath it. I know the tutorial link is for quake and I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if I'll have to retexture the entire terrain. Do you have any input on the terrain texture and what it does and how it's supposed to work? Thanks BTW, Spoon_Gouge
Takeoffyouhoser
Well, I know that in EAsyGen you use system/caulk for the caulk part and hoth/snow_01 or yavin/grass or something like that. You can use any kinda of texture for terrain...but I wanted snow and I only used that texture so far.... You don't use system/texture for your terrain tiles, thats how quake 3 works i am guessing I havn't been playing around with editing much for a few days because of some other problems i am having PC wise....lol.. Catscratch
I'm still clueless about how to use alphamap for jk2. Maybe there must be a proper directory which we should put the alphamap files. However it should support cuz it mentions in the compile process as an error
Spoon_Gouge
Finally... I got a terrain to work! Thanks to ...Hoser and Catscratch for the pointers... especially about removing the extra variables in the terrain func_group. That did it and I finally got a terrain I can run around in. Anyway, now to try some other things with it and to get to the bottom of the mysterious Alphamap and Metashader files??? Spoon_Gouge
Takeoffyouhoser
You're thanking me for advice...lol... Catscratch is the one that told me about it!!! Too bad noone was interested in terrain like back in late may when I decided I wanted to start level making.. i'd ahve 4 rooms done by now!!! Catscratch
Well the alphamap thing is the guide that shows the engine how to texture the terrain with metashader. As i still have no clue how to get alphamap to work, there might not be any solutions or Raven didnt use any of them. I've searched the assets files and no alphamaps at all. In addition, i've never noticed any metashaders used in the existing official SP maps.
Spoon_Gouge
Anyone interested in using ANY terrain editor, either EasyGen or the GTKGenSurf plugin in GTK Radient (It was not availiable in my JORadient), should read THIS first. Like most men I didn't bother with the instructions at first either. In exasperation I transferred the entire manual to Word and printed it and am in the middle of reading it now. Needless to say it gives a rather in depth explanation of both the Alphamap and the Metashader. I am now just beginning to look at the files to see what Easygen created. Stay tuned.... Catscratch
I read it before. However my problem is not creating the files. Where i would put the alphamap is the problem. Exact location in the game's directory. I used the exact rules as mentioned for creating alphamap. Easygen also does it for you. However, even it's pointed in terrain brush, the compiler(sof2map) gives an error " can't open alphamap file ***\****.pcx as 8 or 32 bit image". It's the third time im saying this, but it looks like Raven doesn't even used blended textures for terrains with alphamap&metashader. It's a dilemma that the compiler gives an error "about" the alphamap file.
