You both seem to have the game, so I hope you can give me a good answer: is it worth getting both Metal Gear Solid and the Spcial Missions for a total of £25 (roughly $40)?

Although I have the game, I haven't played it much. I found it too difficult to be enjoyable and soon moved on to other things. So I wouldn't recommend it personally. I, however, am in the minority with that opinion since that is one of the most enduringly popular games yet made for the PSX.

Kanigget is nuts about it.

I'm with wart on this one.

Oftentimes, the camera angels, level design and what-not made the game needlessly difficult (using Snake's cigarette to weave through lasers with an isometric camera view, anyone?).

Other than that, the game was cool for like the first three or four levels, then the initial cool-ness and playability just took a dive, for me personally.

All in all, I found the game to be tiresome.

So, I'd save your cash and go get Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask or something. That is, if you have a Nintendo 64.

Opinions are Preferrence, Rent them for the answers your looking for. Here's my 2 cents anyways.

MGS: Good Story, great Gameplay, Visuals, etc, etc. Overall worthwhile.

VR Missions: liked it for about 2 days, then it got REAL old, REAL quick. Rent first. Don't spend more than 10 to 20 bucks on this one.

Like said before, I would rent it first. I personally loved it. I recently bought it and am now half through. It all depends on what type of game you enjoy. It really isn't that hard once you get used to the controls, just about like every other game. If you liked the Syphon Filter type games, more than likely you will enjoy MGS. But getting both for $40 bucks isnt too bad a deal. However renting first is always a good rule of thumb.

Sounds cool. I've read some reviews that say the same things as you guys. How many discs does the game have? And are any of you playing with a DS controller? Using one is supposed to make it even better, but does anybody know what it does?

What type of camera system does the game have? Is it like JPB (3D Platformer), TPM (Overhead/Behind following), Resident Evil (Camera in fixed place, changing when you get somewhere), or those childrens games like A Bug's Life (Where the camera is REALLY tricky to keep control of)?

It's usually the over-head view, similar to TPM. However, it can change accordingly for different sequences of the game.

Hey dave,

I just recently bought MGS. In my opinion it was well worth the money as it is probably one of the best games I have seen. However, renting as others have said is a decent way to find out if you will enjoy it. It is difficult to start but becomes fairly easy after a little while. As for the Dual shock, it enhances it slightly as there are some periods during the game where the vibration capability is used to promote a sense of actually being in the game - I won't spoil it for you though. However, if you have an autofire capable controller the game can be made even easier especialling in one situation but I'll let you experience that to find out. Enjoy.

The game came today, and BOY was it worth it! I was expecting to be disappointed by the cutscenes (using game characters), but it just made the whole experience better. It's just like an actual movie. And the DS makes it even better (the panning helicopter, etc.). Thanks for the opinions guys.

Shoot, I guess I get back and missed out on the majority of this topic. Anyway, I'll add what I think of it. First of all, unless you set the game to the most difficult setting, it's nowhere near difficult, it's actually almost too easy at times. (Cigarette to see infrared beams? Yup, do things the hard way and the game will get difficult. Of course, you could just use the infrared goggles and make everything easier.) The game, as you seem to already be finding out, is one of the best games out there, some of the best gameplay, with plenty of replay value. (I.E. Beat the game without saving Meril, you'll get the stealth suit, making the game even more enjoyable. Beat it and save Meril, you'll get the bandanna which gives you unlimited ammunition on the weapon you are using while the bandanna is activated. Beat the two times, you wear a James Bond-esque tux. That's just a few examples.) The camera angles have never been a problem in this game. In fact, they enhance it, giving it a movie-like feel to it. As for VR Missions, I haven't played it, so I couldn't tell you.

Thanks anyway, Kanigget. I was finding the game a bit too easy to start off with. And about the special missions anybody: I only have 3 options on the main menu: Extra (view preview movies, etc.), Options (sound, subtitles, etc.) and VR Training (exactly the same format as the training missions in MGS). Is that it, or am I missing something?

Easy?? for the first part yes but some of the bosses are a little more difficult even in normal mode. Liquid still kicks my butt every once in a while. Kanigget, I think the problem with the infrared beams/ cigarette is that most people use the lower ventilation system into the base and thus don't get the thermal goggles in time. As for difficult settings I'm still a little scared to try the "difficult" one - no radar (ouch).
