joystick does not work in WinXP

I am running winXP with a gforce 2 video card with the latest video drivers. I run Xwing Alliance and choose a mission and after a launch , my joystick has no response. It is a standard two button joystick that connects into a serial port.

I test the joystick in windows XP and it works fine, I recalbrated it and it still works fine.

 

Anything I can do? Will a standard usb joystick work ?

My usb joystick works. All I can say is: just try a real good one instead of a standard 2-button one. You'll see that a good joystick improves your game performance. (note: this is not supposed to be a sexual allusion)
