Black armor (spoilers)

When Kyle is on the Doomgiver (or in the Cairn installation, I can't remember), he sees a prototype Shadowtrooper in a glass case and says, "Black armor? Not again..."

 

What was the first black armor he encountered? I assume it was the Dark Troopers, but their armor is mostly gray, not black. Am I missing something?
