MP Freeze with repeating sound

Recently reinstalled JK2 after an 8 month layoff. Immediately stated getting the following problem:

 

When playing MP, it will lock up with the last sound it made repeating in an endless loop. No way out but to hit the reset button on the front of the puter.

 

It happens occasionaly on duel maps VERY frequently (every time, pretty much) on FFA maps. The one time I played CTF, it did it there too.

 

I have run it on a fresh install of XP Home, with sound drivers, video drivers & DX all updated.

 

Specs:

AMD 1800+

GeF3 500ti

512MB RAM

WinXP Home

DirectX 9

Audigy Platinum

(gee, this was a cherry system a year ago... *sigh*)

 

I have searched the forums, found references to the problem, but no solutions.

and you will find many possible fixes for this problem, my fix involved upgrading to a GIG of ram.

Well, still no joy. Even upgraded to the G of RAM.

 

It seems to be somehow related to force powers as the only time I don't get it is during NF Duels.
