Turns out, it's possible to solve pieces of this puzzle in various orders, but if you do that, you can't finish the level. In particular, if you don't go for Nub's part (at the end of the lightning tunnel), and you get Urgon's part then come back for Nub's part and put Urgon's part in its place, the mashers start, and the elevator doesn't work. I'm presuming that putting Nub's part where Urgon's part was makes the elevators work, then you can get around the mashers on the elevator...
