It took a lot of practice, and quite a bit of tutorial searching. I use Photoshop CS3, and I basically looked up tutorials for doing whatever kind of material I was creating until I felt comfortable without the tutorials. Here is a webiste that I have used recently to discover better techniques for skinning. The Dodge and Burn tools are very handy.
