demo crashing (JA Demo)

Try increasing the HunkMeg, which is what Academy determines on how much memory to use to load a level, cause you have to consider that these levels are MUCH MUCH larger than almost all of the Jedi Outcast levels...

to do so, access the console in the main screen and type

seta Com_HunkMegs 192

I say 192 because the formula for HunkMegs is

Seta com_HunkMegs xxx/2 where seta com_HunkMegs is the command and xxx represents the TOTAL amount of system ram divided by 2 so 384/2 equals 192.. For me, I would put 384 since I have 768MB of Total system memory.. Also, try kicking down the graphical detail and turn off dynamic glow and see if that helps.

I had a problem where the game would continuously freeze and I'd have to control-alt-delete to get out. It seemed to happen especially when the jedi attacked with those force powers with the red effects. No tweaking worked, untill I turned off dynamic glow and dynamic lights. That fixed it.

I downloaded and installed the demo today.

Everything seemed okay at first. I played the first level (Tatooine) and it seemed alright. However, as the level progressed I noticed little mulit-colored artifacts popping up and around my screen. Sometimes the game would crash completely when doing "quick loads".

In the second level both of these problems were even worse. Sometimes I could barely see what was going on.

I've been reading around and have turned off force feedback, I turned my moniter down to 16-bit color, I even ran the "Com_HunkMegs" code and I've adjusted the various audio and video settings.

All to no avail. Now it barely gets through loading a level and it'll freeze up completely, forcing me to restart my computer. I'm getting nervous since I pre-ordered this game and I hope the final isn't as buggy as the demo.

My system stats are:

WindowsXP

Pentium 4 2.4ghz

512 ram

128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700

DirectX 9.0a

2.8ghz p4

512ddr ram

128mb gf4 ti 4600

onboard sound (i think)

xp home edition

direct x 8.1 altho i swear i installed 9 :S

yet in the game on max everything and 1024x800 resolution i get 30fps max , i dunno about u lot but i figured my pc would be powerful enough to run it smoothly and high fps on max everything , or is this a thing with it being a demo, cause i had same prob with jk2 ...

p.s i know if i turned down the graphics and glow etc and im still only getting about 50 max is this right ?

there is no Com_HunkMegs and there wasn't in Outcast either, so setting it won't do anything for you.

(clarification, it wasn't in SP, but was in MP, so if you got a Hunk_OutofMemory in MP then raising that cvar would help. But it is not in Acadamy SP OR MP.)

if you have Windows XP, click the "send report" button when it crashes, or post the crash address here and i'll try to figure out what it is.

use the Driver Info button in the video options to confirm your opengl driver is at least 1.3.

like suspects, try these one at a time:

turn off force feedback.

turn off Dynamic Glow

turn off EAX sound

Well, I hate to argue with a guy from Raven, but when i first tried to play LivingDeadJedi's Duel of the Fates map for outcast, I couldn't run the map at all. But after he had me set the HunkMegs in the console, it ran like a charm. He explained I think(since its been over a year since he told me) that the reason DOTF wasn't loading up originally was because Outcast had a capped memory buffer and larger maps like his needed the HunkMegs to be raised in order to load properly.

And I've also had a lot of people confirm that just by setting that command alone has helped make their game run whereas some features I suggested like the dynamic lights and force feedback failed, and I even had the same result in Outcast for people saying that it worked.

And also, when i first set the com_HunkMegs in outcast, Outcast told me in the console that the HunkMegs would be set upon restart and I never would have known that response unless it did work, correct?

but who knows, maybe it was just "fate" for things to work even if it didn't load.

Like I said, I hate to argue with a guy that works for Raven, but I had some luck with that command. More so in outcast than in the Academy demo

Ahh, the powers of faith! :)

A big clue that the cvar won't do anything is that it doesn't exist before you created it. On a fresh install ( or delete your config ) type COM and press tab a couple of times to see if the cvar is there. Cvarlist will also confirm that the cvar does not exist, so setting it cannot possible do anything.

You can set the cvar to whatever makes you the happiest.

(note: you can use zone_details to see how much memory everything is taking up.)

What gets me though is that Outcast worked fine -better than fine really- on my computer, no trouble, and I could run it on all the defaults for my machine.

But the Acadamy demo acts like nothing's good enough.

I tried the Com_HunkMegs code - to no avail. Of course the Raven dude says it doesn't exist. ;)

When I get off work today I'll try playing the demo again. And I'll check my OpenGL driver and my video card driver.

The thing though is that if a person sets the HunKmegs higher than the total system memory, the Q3 engine code of it will crash the game since it knows what the code means but it cannot access that much memory (done that by accident a couple times) :( oops.. :) But like I said, you know the engine better than me, but I had more luck with it than anything else when it comes to large maps.

Yee!

I downloaded and installed the most recent drivers for my video card and that seems to have taken care of my problem.

When looking at the website for my driver (ATI Radeon) it mentioned some of the fixes that the new driver version has and it mentioned Jedi Outcast a couple of times. Although I personally had no trouble with Outcast I took it as a good sign. And it was.

I am pleased. I will now await the game's release next week.

So my advice is: Check your drivers!
