Vile
is it possible to emulate the effect of an ladder like in Half-Life? Or is it out of the question for JA?
WadeV1589
Emulate as in they look like they're actually climbing the rungs of a ladder or emulate as in apply textures/system/ladder to a box where they can move up and down in it with a ladder sound? Vile
I want it to work like in Half-Life, as in you just press fowards when in front of the brush and you go upwards, no sounds needed but that would be nice
mslaf
Sorry, but ladders are not supported by this buggy engine and will not work. If you want HL-like ladders you must switch back to Jedi Outcast. m.-

mslaf
As I wrote, ladders are working fine in Jedi Outcast. Raven didn’t use it in the game but the engine supports it. There is no proper sound or animation when player uses the ladder but it works so you can move slowly up and down. You don’t need the animation if you play from the first perspective and the sound could be “simulated” by the sound triggers. Jedi Academy is a different story, different game with different game philosophy. Ladders are useless because their “functionality” has been replaced by the “force jump”. You don’t need to climb if you can make a high jump or descent if you can fall down without killing yourself. That was a game and/or level design concept and that’s why Raven didn’t use it. The question is why they decided to remove it from Q3A engine? The same ladder, which was working fine in Jedi Outcast, is crashing Jedi Academy with an “Error: Unknown event: 2”. It seems that we can’t use ladders anymore. It’s not a big problem but 237th small one There is an ugly “hack” that can simulate a ladder. You must build a very thin stairs with the clip brush and put it in front of a ladder. The “ugly” thing is that you will climb unnaturally fast and of course you cannot descend without hurting yourself.
WadeV1589
This is the same as portals/mirrors, they modified how they work making it so you can't simply place a texture anywhere now, it has to be vis-blocked. What I don't understand is, they know these games they release are heavily modded from even before the final is released (people start modding from the demo onwards)...so why remove anything? Once it's working they should leave it in, even if they don't use it. Elite Force had portals and ladders totally fine, they chose to remove part of the code for each for JO and remove even more for JA. I just can't get why they should remove stuff when they know the community will most likely want it. Not everyone can force jump, look at seige or a large part of the SP campaign where your force jump is low.
