Burrie
This post will be filled with spoilers from Knights of the Old Republic. If you have not finished it, I urge you not to read this post. All the surprises will be lost, and believe me, you don't want that to happen! Quick, press that 'back' button if you haven't finished. Do it now! Heya folks, Some of you might recognize me, others might not. I used to be a frequent visitor to these forums, but went into a 'self-imposed exile' when the X-Box version was released to avoid spoilers. Last Friday on the 5th of December, I finally got my copy of KotOR, and just about 10 minutes ago, I finished the game. If you folks won't mind, I'd like to share my thoughts with you on my first run-through. As you might've gussed from the subject line, I loved KotOR. I was completely hyped up about the game, and in the end, did expect that the game wouldn't meet those hyped-up expectations. In the end, the game did not even reach those expectations, they surpassed them. I am so completely amazed that KotOR is, in the end, exactly the type of game I wanted it to be, yet still came up with lots of surprises. Well, where to start, where to start... I suppose I might as well start with the story. For me, the story works, the pace was excellent, and fully felt Star Wars. The escape from the Ebon Spire was thrilling and a nice tutorial as well. I personally expected that spending about 10 hours on Taris was going to be insanely boring, but I was surprised how fun the planet actually was. The pace was very good, I never really was lost or didn't know what to do. The sequences on Dantooine were beautiful, and the whole becoming-a-Jedi was masterfully handled. Everything was clear from there on. I was surprised how much freedom the player got when finding the star maps, I expected that you'd go to one planet, then find a clue for the next planet... but the player got a surprising amount of freedom by having an option to go to all the four planets at once. Well, I can go into detail what I thought about each planets, but that would probably bore you. A quick summary would be that I loved Manaan's setting with its neutral nature. Tattooine was a nice sight, 'tho the desert was a bit too large for my taste. Korriban was an excellent planet, especially with the 'infiltrating-Sith-Academy' plotline. And Kashyyyk, so fun to see the homeplanet of the Wookiees. Especially nice to think that my character had a mayor part in their history. The Starforge planet felt really peaceful, and the two complete opposite tribes of Rakatan were intriguing. The Starforge was a bit of a downer, I think... I got a bit tired by the seemingly endless masses of enemies that were thrown at me. The Levithan level was very cool, I think. First I had Juhani sneak around a bit, which was a nice change of pace... and then when Bastila, Carth and my character had their gear again, it got really fun. As I was blasting and slashing through the enemy troops, I got a flashback to the first fight sequence in The Phantom Menace, except that there's also a gunslinger amongst the two Jedi. And of course, I have to at least dedicate a single paragraph to the incredible revelation of the game... and with that, I naturally mean that the player is none other than Darth Revan, reprogrammed. I knew that there was going to be a mayor plottwist in KotOR, which was amongst the main reasons why I went into the 'self-imposed exile'. Suffice to say, I am so glad that I completely avoided all those spoilers, because I was utterly shocked when the truth was finally revealed. That the player was Revan was one of the theories in the back of my head(mostly because Revan was mysterious, hence the revelation would be amongst him, plus the player and Revan shared one thing : They didn't have a voice), but it was truly shocking when the truth was finally uncovered. It worked out masterfully tho', with various flashbacks to show the hints so that the player can still figure it out for himself, and then the masterful, subtle scene in which Revan uncovers his mask... to reveal the main character's face, completely corrupted by the Dark Side. I still did a double-take, even though I saw it coming. It is a brilliant plot twist, right up there with 'I am your father', and is completely in the spirit of Star Wars. But instead of learning that the Bad guy used to be a well-known Good guy, it turns out that the Good guy turned out to be a well-known Bad guy. And of course, the implications are numerous for this, but I suppose I'll hold off my thoughts on that for a later time. All in all, Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic is the perfect Star Wars game, simply put the Game of the Year, and quite possibly the best Star Wars game ever(although I cannot give full judgement on that just yet). For now, I have to stop writing due to some things I have to finish(I dropped a lot of things because of KotOR in the past few days), but I simply wanted to quickly drop by and share my first thoughts on the game. Just curious to see if there are still various folks around whom remember me, and I'm also curious what everyone else thinks of KotOR. Share your thoughts on the game! Samuel Dravis
I don't think you really need to ask if everyone likes KotOR. They'll post it fast enough... It's the best game I have bought in a loooong time. I am truly glad that evil, faceless companies have my money for once. Insulting Carth when you're a female character is really fun - "Ouch, you hurt my man-feelings with that one." Burrie - it takes around 40 hours to finish the game. You actually played it for 13 hours a day!?!?
eidospsogos
it takes forty hours to finish if you don't complete every sidequest. on my second time through i've racked up 70 hours so far and still haven't gone to the unknown world. i mean you have sidequests for each planet, you're character sidequests, multi-world sidequests. i don't see how you could beat the game in 40 hours doing all of them. i have in my quest log, 46 completed quests, and 8 quests that are still as of yet uncompleted. 2 of which will remain so as they only lead to dark-side points(becoming an assasin for the genohardran should result in dark side points ) and were the two uncompleted quests that i am avoiding due to an attempt at a light side trip through the game to be completed they would bring up three more sidequests(i know as i completed one of them, got dark side points went back and talked to the guy, saw where it went, and then loaded the game i saved right before taking the quest), which i would assume would then bring up at least one more. not to mention that no one mentioned the extra planet, that is a spacestation bordering around yavin, where you can get insanely powerful, yet insanely pricey, items. for further details see: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118945 a small sidequest comes of this too, though no journal entry is made of it. i won't spoil it in case no one knows about it yet. but that adds up to a huge amount of play time, and unfortunately alot of XP, as i reached the level 20 cap shortly after receiving the third star map. Samuel Dravis
In my first game, I pretty much only did the quests that were directly related to finishing the game (although I did the Bastila quest through ) and it took around 40 hours. Now that I'm doing it over again for the third time,I'ts taking not as long, even though I'm doing all the quests I can find (although I avoided the Genoharadan quests by not taking the datapad). The quests menu only shows the quests you have discovered, so it's not much use to say you've done x number of them, unless someone knows how many quests there are in the entire game... The yavin station is where you get the Heart of the Guardian and Mantle of the force saber crystals. They are very nice to have. It's funny this time, because I am using a dualbladed saber with Sigil and Krayt Dragon pearl (just finished Tatooine; now on Korriban). When I was on Tatooine at level 12-14, I just used regular attack on a tusken, and killed it in one turn. I like my saber...
eidospsogos
well even if we are unaware of how many quests are in the game it has to do some good to be able to say i have this many in my quest log as it at least gives you a general idea of how many there could be. there may be more but as i have talked to everyone in the entire game, and not yet received any additional ones, i would safely assume there are probably not more than 60 per alignment. maybe even no more than 50.(there are overlapping quests that have solutions for any alignment, and i was including those in the count. but there are alos alignment specific quests as well. ones that can only be completed one way. as i have not gotten the strategy guide yet i can not say for sure how many there are total. but to say your quest log is not a good judgement of this is silly. if you have truly explored your way through the game, your quest log is a very good indicator of how many quests there are. but you are right, the quests do not take as long once you know exactly how to proceed through them. eidospsogos
and this erstimate does not include any sidequest gained while on the unknown world. in my opinion the game is pretty much over upon reaching this planet as you cannot leave once you get there. Hannibal
WELCOME BACK, BURRIE!!!!
Samuel Dravis
Now you need to fix your sig, Hannibal. It's outdated... eidospsogos: Yeah, the game is pretty much at an end once you go to the unknown world. Kind of annoying, but I guess that's alright to keep the story going.
