Something I never understood about lightsabers

I just got the game a few days ago and I recently came across something that stumped me.

We all know the basic single lightsaber, one or two handed, comes in orange, yellow, blue, green, purple and red from the movies (Orange was in Jedi Power Battles I think)

Then you got that neat Double Sided Lightsaber, the Darth Maul trend...

Then in Episode II the not very saber proficient and very whiny Anakin shows us two lightsabers

So what the HELL is the short lightsaber?

It's been driving me nuts, I know it's the same as the standard one, but it's shorter? HOW?????

I stare at the screen and dont notice a visible difference, I read the description and it says its made for the offhand, so here's my two pronged question: What do they mean short and why don't I just use a standard lightsaber in my offhand????

If anybody could give me peace of mind I'd greatly appreciate it, even though I'm being stupid and childish...:bdroid2::D:duel:

ok let's look at it like this:

I'll assume you know that the fact that wether you hit your opponent or not is determined by your attack roll vs your opponents defense rating. Let's say your opponent's defense rating is 14. The computer then picks a random number between 1 and 20 (cos it's based on the d20 system) and adds your attack bonus on your weapon to that.

Ok, now people are always better trained in one hand than in the other but for games it is always automatically assumed you are fluent in using your right hand, and less fluent in your left hand. So whichever weapon you have in your left hand will have a reduced chance of breaching the enemies defense rating.

Now, let's say that the attack bonus on the weapon in your off hand is -7 (so that's actually a penalty) then the attack roll could for example be: 19 - 7. I randomly picked 19 here, just as the comp would.

So 19 - 7 would be 12, meaning that you didn't succeed in breaching your opponents defense. If you equip a short saber in your off hand, however, the penalty is reduced. Let's say that the penalty is reduced by 2 points. So -7 becomes -5. That would mean that the attack roll changes to 19 - 5, which is 14. Then you've succesfully breached the opponents defense with the weapon in your off hand. Then the done damage will be calculated.

Choosing the dual-wield feat will reduce the penalty on wielding weapons in your off hand however so you would do well to choose it while leveling up. As you gain lots of levels your penalty will even turn into a bonus, meaning that you can go back to equipping a normal saber in your off hand. :)

and there IS a visual difference. The short saber is a tad shorter.

Yes, its a way to offset the BAB penalities of dual wield.

But smaller lightsabers are not unheard before SWKotOR, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight featured dark jedi twins and as one is about Yoda size almost as tall as Yoda) the other was almost the size of a Rancor (just not as big).

The smaller twin have a small lightsaber as the bigger twin had a lightsaber that was bigger thate the lightsaber that Kyle used (by far.

Short Lightsaber does 1-12 damage with no bonuses added.

Lightsaber does 1-16 damage with no bonuses added.

So Lightsaber does 0-4 more damage than Short Lightsaber.

If I remember it right, the Short Lightsaber gives +2 to attack compared to the Lightsaber when used in the offhand.

In ANY case, I'd rather choose the +0-4 to damage than +2 to hit.

:saberr: & :saberr: = better than :saberg: & :saberr:
