Guest Red 5
This topic is really for people who own the N64 version. I don't know how different the PC version is. Here is the technical part. I wanted to measure how big a Super Star Destroyer would be if they had put one into the game. The biggest ship in the game however is the Corellian Corvette, on Taloran. A Corellian Corvette is 150 meters in length. I timed the amount of time that it takes to get from one end to the other in the X-wing (because its the average ship). I timed it at full brakes, normal, full speed, and wings closed speeds. Ok take into account that i may be at most a good 5 to 9 hundredths of a second off. However I timed it 3 times for each speed and took the average of them. The were all within 1 tenth. So those hundredths only make for about 20 meters. So these readings are very close. A Star Destroyer is 1.6 kilometers in length (1600 meters, 10 and 2/3 times bigger than the Corvette). A Super Star Destroyer is 8 kilometers in length (8000 meters, 5 times larger than the Star Destroyer, 53 and 1/3 times larger than the Corvette). It took me 5.2 seconds to cross the Corvette with full brakes, 4.4 normal, 3.06 full speed, and 2.07 with wings closed. 5.2 x 10 2/3 is approximatley 55.5 seconds. So it would take you 55.5 seconds at full brake speed to cover the length of a Star Destroyer, 46.9 seconds at normal speed, 32.64 seconds at full speed, and 22.08 seconds at wings closed speed. To give you na idea of how big this is, it takes you about 25 seconds to go through the very first straight away on the death star trench level. If you thought the floating city was big, just times it's diameter by about 6 to get the length of a Star Destroyer. So how big would the Super Star Destroyer be? About 110.4 seconds at closed wing speed. How long is that? Well no level is long enough. To find out though just play the Blockade on Chandrilla level and choose the X-Wing close your wings at the begining. Now fly straight forward until you hit the wall. The game will then turn you. Turn just a little bit to fly parralel to the wall of the game. Now continue flying until you reach the games invisible wall at the back of the city. Now the game will turn you again. Once again straighten yourself out. Now fly to the next invisible wall. Repeat the straightening process. Now fly until you reach the end of the city. THAT IS HOW BIG A SUPER STAR DESTROYER WOULD BE!!!!!!!!!! So how fast are these planes going? Well that's a good question. At full brake speed the X-Wing goes approximatley 64.5 mph. HA you say. It's true though I say. Go ahead time it your self. The only way you could get it to say you were going faster would be to say that the Corvette is too big. Way too big. Unfortunately it's not though. If you put your ship up against it, it appears to be even a little too small. That would mean that your ship is going slower than 64.5 mph. I would say it travels about 60 mph. It may even be slower. "So what if it goes so slow at full brake speed." you say, "How fast would it go at wings closed speed?". 162 mph. A flying Lamborghini could beat the X-Wing. Of course this session of Technical class doesn't end here. i plan on calculating the speeds of all of the vehicles, and also verifying the sizes of things. The sand crawler is a definite example. PS. Remember in Shadows of the Empire? The Star Destroyer in that? For one that ship was way to small. If you took your outrider up into the bay of it, it would take up about a 5th of the bay. I even calculated the speeds of the outrider (assuming that the Star Destroyer was accurate). I remember it only did about 350mph. I think I'm gonna watch Star Wars and see how long it takes a ship to cross a star destroyer. Ohh better yet, the A-wing that crashes into the Super Star Destroyer. Guest Rogue15
the star destroyer is exact size as the real one, umm, you need to get the game x-wing alliance. umm, the x-wing goes faster than you think, ok for example, try this, take the x-wing to tattooine, fly close ot the ground, you'll be going faster than you think, faster than podracing, ok, to prove this, try out beggar's canyon (not the t-16 one) on the first level, near jabba's palace, try following those t-16s, you'll notice that you can go pretty fast that way. Star Destroyers usually stay in orbit, they have these things called shuttles, ever heard of them, they are ships that devliver supplies to star destroyers and personell? And they aren't built on the ground, star destroyers are built in facilities known as Orbital Spaceports, they are built in space, Zero G suits are needed for people to work on them. There has been one case of a star destroyer being on ground though, read X-Wing: The Bacta War for more info on this(this book will make you wanna play moff seerdon's revenge, 'cause in the book the battle takes place on and near thyferra) Well, a super star destroyer is pretty big, the star destroyer in shadows is the size of them in the other games too, just isn't detailed with gun turrets and radar dishes due to "limitations of technology". Red5, you need to get the game X-Wing Alliance, with that you can see and compare the super star destroyer with how big it'd be in rogue squadron. I think the super star destroyer is pretty big, you can see it from about 10 klicks out (100 kilometers) and it'll still look big, kinda scary too, it takes about 2 minutes to get form one end of it to the other, which means that it probably would cause a huge framerate problem with it being in rogue squadron. It'd probably take up half of hoth, the left side of it (from where you start, take a left and then turn right, follow the path until you get to the base), well actually that'd just make up half of a super star destroyer. If you have a good computer, get X-Wing Alliance. I did and am hapy that i did, in fact with x-wing alliance you can make your own levels, and i just got this neat thing that'll let me paint my OWN ship, i'm going to change the gold on the y-wing to a black color! YEAH!!! well, that's if i can figure out how to use it since i didn't try it yet.
Guest The Master
Well, I don't want to pok a small post in here, but I am going to do it anyways. That is very interesting, the Star Destroyer in Shadows of the Empire was WAY WAY to small to be Darth Vaders Star Destroyer, the Executioner. If it was, well, they would have to expand the level a whole lot and that would be too much info for the game cartridge. Which bring me to another topic in the Skyhook battle. When you shot a proton torpedo off into a cloud of ships which include X-wings, it will home in and destroy rebel snub fighters. It will STILL do the same thing if you change to the X-wing, and the Tie fighter, hold on a sec the tie fighter doesn't have proton torpedo's let alone any explosives unless you count the ship it's self when it crashs into the hull of the stardestroyer. That's all I got to say for now.
Guest Red 5
Ok here it is, the complete speeds for every ship in Rougue Squardron. Guest The Master
Now, how will I be able to use all of this invaluable information to my advantage?
Guest Red 5
I didn't find the information anywhere. I calculated those speeds. They're the approximate speeds (within 1 or 2 mph) that the ships in rougue squadron on the 64 go. All I did was use the length of the corellian corvette (blockade runner) which is 150 meters in length. Then I just did a little math to come up with the speeds. The only reason it is an approximation is because I could have been off by a hundreth or so. So you should give those speeds a 1 or 2 mph buffer. I don't know what you could do with those speeds? I used them to see how big a Star Destroyer would be. The first straight away in the death star level is the same length as a Star Destroyer. A Super Star Destroyer is 5 times bigger than that. Guest The Master
Thats pretty good, to find the speeds and calculate them with out help from some officail who made the game or knows a whole whole whole lot about the differn't Star Wars snub fighters and ships. Guest Red 5
Well I personally think that the fighters in Star Wars go alot faster than 200 mph but the ones in Rogue Squadron definitaly do not.
Guest Gold Squadron Leader
Uh guys. This is just a game based on a fictional work. I don't doubt you can get the fictional length in meters of any SW ship from a "technical" manual on the subject, but to take this as a starting point to measure scale speeds in RS game is just a little insane. The models are NOT guaranteed to be to scale to anything else but themselves, ie not to scale at all. This corvette may not be the proper length you expect it to be, therefore your calculations are highly suspect. Don't get me wrong, your math is sound. But the only thing your data can show is the ships relative speeds to each other, NOT the actual speed in MPH. And you could estimate the size of a Star Destroyer in RS IF it was drawn to your scale compared to the corvette, but that's all. ------------------ Ties are flies, swat'em! Guest Darthjoe
Fairly interesting though Red 5.... So that was a Corellian Corvette eh? Waz it in one of the movies? Is a Corvette comparable in size to the medical ship luke and the gang are on at the end of the Empire Strikes Back? Also, is the Corvette bigger than the World Devastors? According to the game, the Battle of Calamari takes place after the Return of the Jedi right? It also says the World Devastors are even more massive and powerful than the Death Star?! Did anyone catch that? First of all they sure as heck aren't bigger. Secondly they aren't more powerful in any sort of way (offensively or defensively). Anyways just a few thoughts of mine... Guest Gold Squadron Leader
World Devastators??? HA HA HA! The mighty World Devastators are the biggest joke in RS. The writers must of gotten a big laugh when they wrote that World Devastators are more powerful than the Death Star. One thing is for sure, they are a lot easier to kill. Just blast the shield generator and wack a couple of legs and their down AND all of its turrents are destroyed? Silly. ------------------ Ties are flies, swat'em! Guest Darthjoe
Speaking of master, I'm getting closer and closer. This weekend I was promoted to Fleet Admiral for having 11 golds and 7 silvers. Some of these levels are going to take some time to get gold in... like the rescue on Kessel. How do you destroy 103 enemies!? If you destroy a prison after the shuttle leaves, will there be stormtroopers underneath to shoot at?
Guest The Master
No, you must wait until AFTER the little people come out of the shuttle and into the prison. After they do, little Imps shall stream from little building around the building. DON'T destroy the buildings that are rectangular. Therefor DESTROY the turrents as soon as you get to the prison becuase they do not desposit troopers fopr your trigger happiness. Got it? Good. Guest Gold Squadron Leader
The Master is correct, you must wait till AFTER the stormtroppers come out of the barracks before blasting the buildings and the troppers. In the mean time kill all other ground targets and keep the ties away from the Rebel landing craft. If you need a detailed walkthrough for this or any level, just ask and ye shall receive. ------------------ Ties are flies, swat'em!
Guest Red 5
Wow I go away and this topic gets off subject. My original point was that everything was not to scale as it was in the movies. The Corvette is just a little too small. The ships in RS move too slowly. ANd yes I am a Star Wars freak. Why else would I calculate the speeds of the ships. Oh yeah because I'm gonna be a Aerospace engineer. Yeah yeah yeah, one day I will invent a shield generator so that space stations will no longer have to worry about space dust the size of a walnut penetrating the wall and killing everyone. Other benefits include actually being able to pass through the asteroid belt, and set up a moon base without the bombardment of tie bombers, er, i mean asteroids. Oh yeah I forgot, this was supposed to help keep the subject on subject.
Guest Gold Squadron Leader
Glad your back Red 5. Well this thread has gotten way off topic, don't they all? I responded with my first post that RS is just a game based on a fictional universe so trying to calculate scale speeds for it was kind of silly. Yes, your point that the ships go too slow proves that sort of. My point is there are no concrete measurements in RS to use as a starting point for your calculations in the first place, so your results are meaningless. Only observation that can be measured was the relative speed difference between ships. BTW, good luck with your plans to become an aerospace engineer. ------------------ Ties are flies, swat'em! Guest Darthjoe
Well I think your math is fine Red 5. The only issue would be if things are to scale. If the Corvette is to scale then you are right on. In any case, the ships do travel slow. This is obvious, since you have to close your wings (on the x-wing) just to catch up to speeder bikes. How ridiculous is that?
