How do you build walls!?

ya build one piece at a time, but what I do is start on one end and put another end of the wall on the other end of where i wanna build it and then work to meet the other wall, eventually they automatically are built.

1. Select a worker droid.

2. Click the "Build base defense" button or whatever and select the wall.

3. Now do the same you would have done when drawing a line in a paint program. Click at the starting point and, while holding the mouse button down, drag the wall down to the end point.

To place gates (Tech level 2 and above): Select gate, and tell the droid to build it somewhere on the wall (it'll be built into the wall, so don't bother demolishing the wall before putting it down).

What kind of defenses can become part of the wall?

IE:

======|---|======

were = is wall

| is a defense tower

--- is the gate.

Cominations like this?

Yep, you're supposed to stick gates in the middle of walls. What I do is click-drag a wall and then stick my gate foundation over part of the wall foundation. You can also put gates in the middle of completed walls. If you want turrets to be a part of the wall system, you can either put them right behind the wall where they will be protected, or leave a square in the wall empty and stick in a turret instead. This extends the "danger zone" in front of the wall by one square, but the turret will be much more vulnerable as well.

(Now that I re-read your post, it seems apparent you already knew about gates...but no, the only thing you can put "in" the wall is the gate. If you want turrets or fortresses to be a part of the wall, you will have to delete that part of the wall or leave it clear first.)

Personally, I'm not big into walls, and rely on a large infantry force to hold off any initial attacks and then to shove the enemy away to his base with artillery support. In any case, air transports make walls nearly obsolete in a high-tech battle unless you have a very extensive AA network. In this and other games I see people just put a big square of wall around their base, which IMO wastes ore and shuts them in. Use natural chokepoints such as river crossings and forest paths -- if these chokepoints shut in your enemy, all the better -- in which to build your walls, but be sure to cover all the bases. Sometimes you will need one big wall that stretches across a big plain to protect yourself. And be sure that in maps with a lot of water that any ocean or river area by your base has a "sea wall" at the coastline which defends against amphibious invasions.

Obviously this demands that you explore the map extensively. What I do in the beginning is set waypoints for my Scout -- select him, hold Shift and right click on every location you want him to go, then release Shift and right click on his final destination. By quickly making a lot of waypoints for the Scout, I can easily explore half the map with nary a thought on my part due to the Age of Kings' engine's good pathfinding.

Well, those are just a few tips...

Keep in mind that

-when you build a wall too close to your base, you've got no expansion space

-when you build a wall too far from your base, your defense force will need more time getting there and the enemy can do more damage.

Here's another suggestion for extra protection. It's expensive, however:

1. Make a double wall. Have some room between the wall "lines", one tile will do.

2. Build gates into both of the walls, at the same place:

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

3. Place turrets "inside" (number 1 below) and behind the wall (number 2 below) along the wall.

2

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

Kind of heavy protection. Or for the paranoid ones, do like this:

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

====I==I=====

====I==I===== j/k, hehe :)
