Since you are talking about what is intelligent and what not, I surely think it's the most intelligent to eliminate the problem (= the enemy) by the source (= their spawnpoint). So destroy their spawnpoint instead of trying to keep them where they are and giving him (a small) chance to escape. If you are actually trying to destroy their spawnpoint, then you need to spawnkill enemies. But that's not problem, cause it's all for the purpose of destroying their spawnpoint.
