14. Mods containing assets (models, textures, sounds, etc.) ported from another game are prohibited

It is against Lucasarts policy to port assets from one game to another. Holowan Laboratories does not condone porting of this nature, and moderators will close or delete any thread or posts discussing such mods. The exception to this is if the asset in question is present in both KOTOR and TSL. Also, modders may create from scratch mods that resemble assets from another game.

Okay... So in the mod request thread someone asked if Darth Revan's Robes and the Star Forge Robes from KotOR could be made in TSL. I typed up some instructions on how this person could easily do this on their own by porting the uti files from KotOR and my post was deleted. In retrospect, I suppose it broke the above rule. Oddly enough though, I distinctly remember someone posting instructions for porting JKII models to KotOR with no problems and I also remember downloading a mod posted here that required porting things from KotOR with full instructions on how to do so.

But that's not what this post is about.

I need to know what is considered to be in violation of the above rule and what is not if I am to make this mod. The models and textures for the robes are all in TSL, so using them couldn't possibly violate any copyright laws. I just need to know how to go about making the uti files.

Also, modders may create from scratch mods that resemble assets from another game.

So does that include replicating the uti files including their descriptions word for word? Or do I need to change something for it to be okay?

I just want to be absolutely clear on all of this so I don't end up going through all of the trouble of making (not that it's hard to make) and uploading this mod just to have it deleted.

THis has already been addressed here. Well mostly.

http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=146575

Using models and textures that are already in TSL to recreate a mod from KOTOR1 is fine as all the info is there in the game already (making it a LOT simpler ;) ). If you had to port a model over from KOTOR1 then you couldnt release it to the public as its using copywrited material. You can port models over for your own use without telling anyone but dont release them.

Using models from JKA was dealt with in the same way. Models from the game created by Raven werent allowed to be brought over for KOTOR but models made from scratch by fans were as they werent the property of Raven or LucasArts. You would still need permission to use the models for KOTOR from the model makers but once you have that (in writing just to keep things easy) you would be able to post the mod.

UTI files from KOTOR made by Bioware you cant bring over by UTI files made by fans you can (you may need to modify them to make sure they are the same, I havent checked to see if all the lines in the 2da files are the same) but pretty much:

Made by Bioware = No

Made by fans = Yes (with their permission if yu plan on releaseing it otherwise No)

Thats how I see the rule and have read how the mods have replied so I hope i have helped a bit and if anything I have written is wrong one of the mods will point it out and clear things up before long. (~waves~ Hey Darth333 :) )

Just make your very own version of that *.utc file then, copying it word by word.

It would be identical to Bioware's file, but it would be your own.

Though it's ridiculous that you have to do this... copyright can be exaggerated imo.

Hello,

Copying a work word for word and presenting it as your own is plagiarism.

Creating a new unique UTI file that points to assets already in the game files should be OK.

I suggest creating a new UTI and making it as unique as possible. Make up a new description, use a different cost for the item, give it new properties, etc...
