A properly mastered DVD movie will always look better than a VHS tape movie, simply because the resolution is higher. ;)

I didn't think the deleted scenes added much, but were worth watching for the background details. While TPM was my least favorite of the SW movies thus far, the DVD was certainly feature packed!

There's a slight flaw in the mastering or something, the movie is "too sharpened" looking (compare to AOTC DVD or the OT DVD, they're much softer edged). You can compensate for this with your player most of the time, but it's a bit annoying.

Other than that, the TPM DVD is awesomely done, and definately set the bar for future releases (the AOTC DVD had slightly fewer features, and the OT had only one disc of extras for all three movies). It gives you the most content out of them all so far. I got mine cheap!

As far as deleted scenes, certainly action scenes are cool, and the Pod Race was one such scene. AOTC had some action scenes that were deleted, but they didn't show up on the DVD :(. Oh well, finishing those scenes cost millions, I guess Lucas didn't want to go to the trouble for them... keep the fans wanting more for the next movie, eh? ;)

I don't think so. When AOTC came out they made a HUGE deal about it being the first all digital big screen film (at least from Lucas, not sure if it was the first EVER). It was also shown at digital theaters with a higher quality (and scenes added) cut. The film transfer was the one shown at most theaters, but it was converted, because most theaters in the US are not equipped for digital (at least not back in '02, probably not now either).

TPM still had elements that were not shot on digital, it was rather a hybrid if I'm not mistaken.

If you're just saying that AOTC on DVD will do a better transfer of the "film" from the original to the disc, yes, you're right, but I think it's still an aproximation, compromise whatever. DVD is still compressed video, so SOME quality is lost, but it's much closer than a non-digital film could be on this format. So if they make an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray high def transfer of AOTC it will still potentially look better on the right equipment than this DVD.

I hope I wasn't confusing in my above post. I said that OT also looked better than the TPM disc (softer image, rather than too sharp like the TPM one). This might be due to the OT being transferred to a new digital master in the restoration process, but still. Other reviewers have pointed out the sharpness problem on the TPM DVD. People didn't widely complain about it then because we didn't have any other SW DVD's to compare it to. The image quality is simply better in the new ones, it's obvious to anyone comparing them.

Ok. That's true (DVD = Digital Video Disc), but I mean none of the SW movies were straight to DVD. Each of the DVD's is a transfer of the original which was always done on film stock, except for AOTC, which was digital (although traditional film versions were created from it for wide release).
