creating Jedi Academy weapons/characters/etc

Im pretty much the embodiment of noob regarding JA and JK modeling. uhhh so basically im just asking...i know how to model....butt what programs do i need to create JA models...and i guess whats the general idea off the whole process.....il put you in my will. if you help me out. please im desperate. thanks
