Alternate Universes

Completely unrelated to anything, but possibly of interest to anyone with ambitions of being a writer.

I've noticed that when I watch TV or movies, the thing that sticks in my mind is what I'd do as a writer. What would happen if I was writing the story.

Frex, in The Mummy Returns, I thought the writer(s) missed a great opportunity to do something completely new with Imhotep's character (i.e., letting him win, after a fashion).

I've done it to Gundam Wing too, come up with a different scenario that (I think) seems much cooler than the original.

What I want to know is; does anyone else do this, or is it just an example of my own wierdness?

"Do fish-people eat fish, or would that be like humans eating monkeys?"

"Humans do eat monkeys. In fact humans eat other humans. . . Y'know, as a species, we are really quite unpleasant."

I've got Star Wars and Gundam Wing alternate universe that I've done.

I like doing alternate endings too.

btw, have you seen the Star Wars: Infinities comic? It's pretty sweet. I wish I could get it when I comes out. The preview pics rock. Seeing the Death Star blast Yavin IV....

Agreed with Jabba.

"Mental rewrites" are what allow me to tolerate NJO and the other really bad Star Wars books.

For NJO, I just do a mental search-and-replace to switch "Kyle Katarn" with "Kyp Durron," and rewrite from there.

Try applying the 'alternate universes' technique to reality, and shift it to the future so you're conceptualizing the end results of present circumstances.

Now that's a lot more useful, isn't it? biggrin.gif
