Guest Lord Emperor Zoom Rabbit Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 I have made a disturbing discovery. Along with the used power tools, leather jackets and cheap guns they usually have at the local pawn shop, a unique item of antique interest has made its appearance: a samurai sword. Not just any samurai sword, but a real one, handmade the traditional way before World War 2. Many such swords found their way into American hands during the war as they were mounted and taken into battle as military officer's weapons. Occasionally, they show up in pawn shops and antique stores, but they are becoming scarce...like the one I found. The sword was made by Kanetaka, one of the Gendai swordsmiths from the Mino region, with a beautifully undulating sambon-sugi temper line in the blade, in imperial kai-gunto (navy officer) furniture. At $550, I immediately brought in a couple antiques from my own collection and said 'Take that sword out of the window!' $150 down, the sword is now on layaway. Anyway. I still need $400 to finish buying the thing. Being your emperor, I have decided finally to levy a flat tax on all forum members for the necessity of purchasing a new 'sword of state.' If each member will send five bucks to Zoom Rabbit, we will be able to accomplish this goal more quickly. Go team! Thank you. <font color=red>Free Tibet!</font> 'Vive la resistance!' ------------------ "It's great to be the king...but Lord Emperor just sounds better." Guest Rogue 9 Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 there's only like twelve active members in this part of the forum zoom, that would only be 60 bucks that leaves you aways to go.
Admiral Odin Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 That sounds like a great sword. Although I myself prefer the euro made ones. Oh Zommie they still hand make those swords in Japan. ------------------ "Dulce bellum inexpertis." (Sweet is war to those who have never experinced it.) Roman Proverb
Keyan Farlander Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Good find, Zoom. I'd help you out, but...I just don't feel like it
Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Actually, Admiral, the modern handmade swords are more expensive than the antiques I'm talking about. Crazy, huh? Here is a picture of the type of sword I'm getting (about three-quarters down the page, where it says kai-gunto): http://www.japanesesword.homestead.com/files/military.htm I want it, I want it, I want, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it, I want-- Zoomie shut up? Certainly. That'll be five dollars. *Cha-CHING!* $395...
Guest Grand_Admiral_Ice Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Look Zoom, get a job, use a credit card or get a loan from the bank and tell them the money is for a down paymeent on a card. You can also rob a bank or a armored truck that's completely full of money not an empty one. You can just steal the sword, just hope the guy doesn't have a shotgun behind the counter.
JR2000Z Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 I want the Masamune. Even though there is a huge chance that there isnt one, I still would like it if it was real.
Guest Grand_Admiral_Ice Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Why would you want a sword once wielded by a half man half frog? (I've played Chrono Trigger but not Chrono Cross)
Guest Grand_Admiral_Ice Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Who had the Masamune before Cyrus and who had it after Glenn? [This message has been edited by Grand_Admiral_Ice (edited June 05, 2001).]
Admiral Odin Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Zoomie I just mesioned that they still do make them by hand, I do find it funny that the antique is cheaper. Good Find. ------------------ "Dulce bellum inexpertis." (Sweet is war to those who have never experinced it.) Roman Proverb
Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Uhm...Masamune was indeed a real swordsmith, the most famous of all. His work is sold occasionally to jet-setters who sip cognac over swords worth thousands of dollars that really should be in a museum to begin with. I recognize none of those names, except for sephiroth, which is actually a term used in Kabbalah to describe one of the ten energy centers (roughly equivalent to chakras in yoga) on the Tree of Life. You kids have completely lost me this time... ADmiral: you can have my old gendaito--NOT! The one I already own is the second sword down on that page, although I did some leatherwork to the saya and tsuka of mine. Swords are fun. <img src="http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/splarka/as-one.gif" height=18 width=18> Tree Fibet! [This message has been edited by Zoom Rabbit (edited June 05, 2001).]
Admiral Odin Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Zoom you should see the flail that I recently added to my wall. It is a beaut. ------------------ "Dulce bellum inexpertis." (Sweet is war to those who have never experinced it.) Roman Proverb
JR2000Z Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Do they make make the edge dull to sell, or do they make still make it sharp?
Gold leader Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 You have a sword, and a guy behind a counter that wants your money. The solution is simple, I'd say. <font size=-3 color="black"> [This message has been edited by Gold leader (edited June 06, 2001).]
Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 7, 2001 Posted June 7, 2001 Unfortunately, he uses logic, which leads to guns. No help there... Besides, I've been dealing with him for years and kinda know him. I'm taking him to the cleaners as it is--he isn't accounting for the blade's gendaito status or the art value of the hamon (temper line.) I estimate it to be worth about twice what he's asking. Serves him right, though...cheap SOB won't give people more than two bucks for a used CD.
Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 Update: *(After having worked insane overtime hours in recent weeks in order to procure the required sword of state, I can now say...)* Got it! While surfing the web, I ran across an example of the smith's work. The pattern of mine is slightly different (sambon-sugi mixed with kami-no-tsame to be technical) but this is very nearly like mine: http://www.sho-shin.com/kanetaka.htm Yes. ------------------ 'What's up is clearly defined as the opposite of what is down, in this case being the strongest source of local gravity...failing that, in space, what's up is opposite the direction of accelerative G-force--or what I'm targeting with these laser cannon. Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 Can't get there from here, apparently! I've checked. That's the address, really! Try entering it manually... It's real purty.
Flying Beastie Posted June 20, 2001 Posted June 20, 2001 *sigh* Jr, JR, JR. If you're trying to rack up a body count, use guns or explosives. Swords are used to show skill and finesse. ------------------ It's like I always say: When the going gets tough, the tough . . . switch to artillery.
Guest Zoom Rabbit Posted June 22, 2001 Posted June 22, 2001 Actually, the best time to body count ratio is achieved with viruses. *Cough! Sneeze!* <font size=1>Egscuse me. *Sniff!*</font>
