Liam8
Hello there, I've trawled through the forum and tried all the recommendations for this problem. I play EAW and it sometimes locks up at the main space battle screen, other times I can play for 1-2 hours before it locks up, requiring me to do a hard reboot. My Specs AMD Athlon XP 3000+ A7V8X-X mb 1Gb PC3200 Sapphire 256Mb X700 Pro AGP DirectX 9.0c EAW v1.3 I've tried a few of the suggestions on this forum but none seem to make any difference. Many Thanks in advance for your help Liam
Guest DarthMaulUK
Check what programs you have running in the background. Turn off the ones you are not using. EaW can be a little power hungry sometimes when theres alot going on DMUK
Liam8
Hi, Thanks for the reply DarthMaul UK, I have closed down a whole load of background services, uninstalled and re-installed the game but still I have the same problem. The game freezes with a popping sound and sound effects are played in a loop. It sometimes even freezes on the menu screens and I don'e even get a chance to load a game etc Many Thanks Again Liam

Guest DarthMaulUK
Can you both please run a dxdiag check for me, then post your findings on here. It will be a large txt file, so it will take a couple of postings. Once you've done that, I will see if anyone at Petroglyph can take a look to find some answers. There is a good chance that the next patch might fix your problems and that is due soon. In the meantime, run this check. To run a dxdiag check..... click on START then RUN type in the box- dxdiag (as i have typed it....all lower case, no spaces) Hit enter. it might ask you to assign something, click NO then wait for it to continue. Once it has completed its run, clcik on save as, then save it to desktop. Then copy and paste each section onto the forum. It will take a couple of posts. Liam8
A quick update. I've just downloaded the latest patch (v1.04) and have got some new Audigy drivers that let me have EAX in game. I thought this might be a problem. I also went into task manager and set sweaw.exe to low priority but it's still freezing on me. I've just been reading on other forums about Audigy's 'squeal of death' which locks PCs, does anyone else have this problem I've also ordered a new PSU to see if that is the problem Any news from Petroglyph on this situation? I really like this game and just wish I could spend more time playing it especially with FoC announcements Edit: After a complete reformat, defrag, reinstall & patch I ran EAW and it froze at the main menu screen Many Thanks Again Liam
VW_Factor
Ok.... No kidding.. My wife and I recent purchaced a couple copies of this game. Currently, she is the only one that can play it. This isnt a random freeze, this happens ALL THE TIME. Whenever there is a land battle going to happen, I'll freeze at the loading screen for the land battle. Otherwise, the game works fine. In single player I can use the auto-resolve, but what fun is that? Besides, my wife and I were hoping to be able to play against each other in multiplayer. Rig is as follows. -AMD 3800X2 -MSI K8N Neo Plat. -2G OCZ middle line RAM -eVGA nV7800GTX KO -SB Audigy -Enermax Noisetaker 485W -SATA HDDs on the nVRaid controller In troubleshooting I have done the following. -I tried running software emulated sound. -I removed the Audigy and ran on-board. -I removed the sound drivers for on-board and ran with no sound. -I tried every voltage and timing combo imaginable (within safe limits) for my RAM and CPU. -I ran stock clocks, overclock, underclock, the CPU. -I did the same with the RAM. -I uninstalled the game and reinstalled. -I again uninstalled the game and tried the demo -I reinstalled windows on a seperate HDD, and tried with a fresh install. -I ran "stripped" of background apps and services. -I picked my nose while loading the land battle. So far nothing has solved this issue nor helped it. Emails to "support" continue to go unanswered. It really baffles me, because my wifes rig which is close in configuration with SLI 6600GTs (SLI mobo obviously) runs the game beautifully. I have no issues with any other games (minus some tuning and tweaking here and there). This game is beyond me. No amount of tweaking or configuring that I can think of is getting this game to run properly. I would appreciate some help with ideas, etc.
Guest DarthMaulUK
And after all that, the most important things you failed to mention are.... 1) Install latest graphic card drivers 2) Install latest version of direct x9c (which is on the CD) DMUK
VW_Factor
And after all that, the most important things you failed to mention are.... 1) Install latest graphic card drivers 2) Install latest version of direct x9c (which is on the CD) DMUK Dont you think after all that, I would have tried that? (Im not really a dummy, but thanks) Yes. (I usually update video drivers as soon as they are released) Tried older drivers, tried the new 9x series betas. No go. Stayed with the current 84.21s as I dont really like the new nV control panel in the betas. And Yes. I have even reinstalled DX9.0c numerous times. Even the newer version from MS. Do you have any suggestions besides a "helpdesk" generic response? I however have a feeling this doesnt have much to do with the graphics subsystem in the machine. When the machine freezes the sound was looping, or sometimes would static, or pop. Thats why I went after the sound card, etc. After finding that video drivers, etc really had nothing to do with the problem.
Guest DarthMaulUK
If you can post yr dxdiag we can take a look. Have you updated your AMD chip drivers as well? There was something in our forums about freezing, did you check the Nvidia fix thread? Incase this helps. DMUK

There was something in our forums about freezing, did you check the Nvidia fix thread? Incase this helps. DMUK AMD chip drivers are the latest available that are WQHL approved. I will run a dxdiag report. Should I post that here in this thread, or should I PM or email it to someone (They are quite large if IRC). I will as well take a look at the nV fix thread. VW_Factor
I looked at the nV 6800 fix thread (as suggested). I fired up the demo version (because its quicker to get to a land battle) and selected a resolution under what was suggested in the thread. It did not lock and I engaged in my first land battle (yay.png). I was merely testing to see if it would lockup during loading, so I entered with the very small "default" fleet and got my butt handed to me. I will test it again. I want to see it work 4 or 5 times before I will give it a "passing" grade. Otherwise, Im looking forward to enjoying the "other half" of this game. Looks to be lots of fun. VW_Factor
No good. Still locks loading land battles. However, its only about 1 in 4 now. If I cant find a solution here in the next few days I think Im going to see if I cant take these games back. Its fun, but not worth this hassle. Liam8
VW_Factor, It seems to me that our lock ups are very similar. Sound loop and popping, could it be an Audigy issue. I've had better results with this game if I turn off AA and disable hardware mouse. I've been running the game now for a few hours with no lockups. I'm not sure if this will fix your problem but I'm going to keep my eye on it for the next few days Hope this helps Liam
