Weird "crash"

I've had this weird crash happen (twice in KotOR I, once in KotOR II). Sometimes, when I go to an exit to change the area, the screen flashes a color and then returns to the main menu. However, I can't select any of the options of the menu; my only choice is to alt-F4 the game. It happened at:

• Entering the Sandral back door in KotOR I (the screen flashed pink)
  
• Entering the Elder Territory on the Unknown world in KotOR I (the screen flashed blue)
  
• Entering the Iziz Spaceport from the Merchant Quarter in KotOR II (the screen flashed gray)

Any reason as to why this is happening? It's not often, but it is annoying when it happens.
