Copyright

There is such a thing as a poor-man's copyright... When you're done, put the whole thing in a legal envelope, mark what it is on it, and mail it to yourself... When you get it back, DO NOT OPEN IT. You can use the date of posting that gets stamped on it as proof of when you wrote it. I do it with my songs all the time.

I have a filing cabinet full of unpublished stuff I've written and want to protect.

"All your base are belong to us", "Surrender for your own good"

- Kanon Siege Forces, 2001

That's originally from the game "Zero Wing" ('89), for the Sega Genesis. The game had a f**ked up translator, and the intro for the game was thus:

IN AD 2101

WAR WAS BEGINNING

CAPTAIN: WHAT HAPPEN !

MECHANIC: SOMEBODY SET UP US THE BOMB.

OPERATOR: WE GET SIGNAL.

CAPTAIN: WHAT !

OPERATOR: MAIN SCREEN TURN ON.

CAPTAIN: IT'S YOU !!

CATS: HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN !!

CATS: ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.

CATS: YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO DESTRUCTION.

CAPTAIN: WHAT YOU SAY !!

CATS: YOU HAVE NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME.

CATS: HA HA HA HA ....

OPERATOR: CAPTAIN !!

CAPTAIN: TAKE OFF EVERY 'ZIG'!!

CAPTAIN: YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DOING.

CAPTAIN: MOVE 'ZIG'.

CAPTAIN: FOR GREAT JUSTICE.

You should also send it "Registered Mail" so you have proof of the date that you mailed it.

I've composed loads of music but do not care about copyright, I just do it for fun. I rarely play the same thing twice because most of the time I improvise using a random beat.

I just recently started composing with a friend a very funny Gypsylike song and so far we're laughing and enjoying it a lot. Copyright never crossed my mind, I just enjoy what I do.

I don't know about stories, but the one thing I recall from the Music Business class I was required to take is that ANY PIECE OF MUSIC IS OFFICIALY COPYWRITED WHEN IS IS SET DOWN IN SOME RECORDED FORM! Either paper or tape, doesn't matter. You make a record of it, you own it.

HOWEVER: Defending that copyright if you feel that someone has stolen something from you is where the tricky part comes in, and where all the steps that Nitro described comes in.

Officially copyrighting anything with the government is actually very easy and pretty cheap, considering the additional peace of mind that it gives you. I highly recommend going that route if you belive that somebody could have access to your work.

I'll go through my old college notebooks and get some links or addresses for you guys.

The thing about AYB is that there simply isn't a good time to use it. You can't use it as a witty retort, an exuse for some silly thing you did, or anything else. For Great Justice, on the other hand...
