What's a .VBS file?

Recommended Posts

OK, well as some of you know, I'm pretty blonde when it comes to computers, so can someone tell me what a .vbs file is? It only appears when I download an MP3, like I can play it, but then it turns itself into a file called .mp3.vbs and then I can't even play what I've just downloaded. Is it some kinda virus or something?

VBS stands for Visual Basic Script and is very popular for virus makers.

You have a virus, and probably it is the infamous "I LOVE YOU" virus.

Either have you opened a file with that name or you have perhaps got it via Gnutella, a popular place to transfer viruses.

You have to get an Anti Virus Progam and get rid of the virus!

PS

Never, never download a file with the extension *.vbs!!

Arggg, I hate it when people don't know about the file extension thing! Virus writers rely people falling for tricks (no offense Natty). Windows should have the "Hide extensions for know file types" thingy unticked by default, it would save alot of hassle.

Did you get all of the 'MP3s' from the same place Natty?

Where's the thingie I need to untick?

Me feels more stupid than usual

Yeah I did, I used a programme called Kazaa, but they were all different users. I just noticed there's Gator on the computer, and I think Grannen said that always sends a lotta viruses or something. As yet the virus scanner hasn't been reinstalled (I reformatted on the weekend) Is there a place on the net I could scan the computer just to make sure there isn't a virus on the computer?

That thing to untick (depending on Windows version, this is for Windows ME) is under Tools - Folder Options - View. Then untick Hide file extensions for know file types.

I use Kazaa, did you search on the 'Everything' search or on 'Audio', Audio search should only show up recognised file formats - mp3, wav, wma, mid etc.

I think you'll need to download another virus scanner. I recommend PC-CILLIN as it picks up the most virus types apparently

Bah, I don't think Bill Gates does any work any more, he just climbs trees and whizzes on peoples head when they walk past, just because he's so rich he can get a way with it.
