Ninja turtles woo kung-fu director

AFP - After eight years away from the big screen, former kid craze, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will rise from the sewers again, thanks to director John Woo.

The action superstar, who last directed Mission Impossible 2, is working on a computer-animated feature-film version of the $US4 billion ($A7.74 billion) franchise, according to website Zap2it.com.

"I've always loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Woo said in a statement.

The film - budgeted at between $US40 million ($A77.44 million) and $US60 million ($A116.17 million) - has a target release date of Christmas 2001, Zap2it.com said.

Turtles co-creator Peter Laird said the project will mark a return "to their darker, edgier comic-book roots."

The first Turtles movie - featuring live action with puppetry by Jim Henson's Creature Shop - was a 1990 phenomenon, grossing $US135.3 million ($A261.96 million), the entertainment website reported.

The sequels didn't do as well.

Woo! I hope this really turns out! (Unlike the supposed A-Team movie.) This would be awesome! I'm a big TMNT fan (as Frenchy can attest to), I watched them all the time when I was but a youngster. I'd love to see a new movie! This would be awesome, especially something that's a little more serious, like the first one.
