olfey
hi i'm new to the forum but i've been reading around here for a while. also, i've been playing psychonauts for a while, which is the reason i post this. anyway, there's a thing i observed on which i wanted to hear your opinion (actually there's two things, but for that see my other threat) . i have a little problem bringing together the history of the asylum and maybe you have theories on what could have happened. given that the asylum was closed 55 years ago (the tree in the parking lot says this, and it fits to the decay of the building) , why are there still patients in there? i know without them the game would suck and i like them all... okay i have two theories what could have happened. a) edgar, gloria, boyd and crispin were patients and fred a *whateveryoucallitinenglish* at the asylum. it closed and they stayed, after dr loboto took over the rule there. fred may have gone mad before or after this, anyway crispin became lobotos assistant. boyd was brainwashed by oleander to become the guard. i base this on the assumption that the asylum we can see in the memory reels in freds and boyds minds is houston thorny asylum. But it is obvious that this can't work, since the asylum was closed 55 years ago and they are all not that old . this leads to theory b) they were all inmates (including dr. loboto) at another asylum who managed to escape or where freed by coach oleander to be brought to houston thorney. this would fit in the timeline but brings up another question: if coach oleander freed loboto because he needs him for his plan why would he bring a bunch of crazies with him? you see this is all a bit complicated ... maybe you have some ideas since i didn't find anything about this in this forum yet p.s.: please excuse any spelling, grammar or vocabulary mistakes, i'm german
Digitaldreamer
I'm thinking B is the more likely answer, since Vernon told a story a bit like that before everyone got their brain's taken. Fred, Gloria, and Edgar don't seem old enough to have been standing around the former aslyum guards for that long. As for why they're there, I think Oleander brought them to be used as test subjects. *shrugs* It's the best explanation I can think of.
olfey
yeah i thought of something like that too...
DylanMay
I agree with B. I figured they were from another asylum and either came or were brought there. Maybe Oleander brought Loboto, and loboto brought Crispin (to guard the elevator) and Crispin brought Fred (for revenge, you know, Crispin gets to be the orderly and boss Fred around). Then I guess the others either followed Fred or Crispin... it's obvious by the end dialogue that they were all in the same asylum together. But if they were from another asylum, then how come, at the end, they don't seem to notice they're in a new asylum? An abandoned one, no less? Fred says "Let's get out of there, this is a place for crazy people," or whatever. So they know they're in an asylum, but no one seems to know or care that it's abandoned, which implies they've been there a while or have been there since the beginning. That supports the first theory. Gahhhhh incontinuity. It makes my head spin...
