mixer config disabled

Im not sure if you have seen my previous post, but I have half fixed the problem. Unfortuanately, the only way to get it to work is by changing the mixer config to disabled, which means I get no in-game sound. This is quite annoying seeing as I recently installed some surround sound speakers for my computer. Does anyone know why having mixer config on would make the game close down and return to the desktop? I checked, and my sound hardware is suitable for the game.
