Iron Maiden are easily the UK's largest ever metal outfit. Spawned during the halcyon NWOBHM days, a period which also saw Def Leppard catapulted to a similar level of global success, the band have shifted millions of albums and countless more concert tickets and merchandise over the last quarter of a century.

For the recent Brave New World opus and trek, the band utilised a three-guitar line-up comprising Dave Murray, Jannick Gers and Adrian Smith that complemented mainstay bassist Steve Harris in producing easily their best album for years.

Aside from various dalliances with the likes of Ibanez, Lado, Jackson, ESP and Gibson, the three axe-slingers have always been associated with Fender guitars. Harris, meanwhile, still plays the same Precision he's owned for years - a couple of Custom Shop paint-jobs are the man's only nod towards customisation of his much-treasured P-bass.

It may seem strange that a band of Maiden's stature are only now, 25 years into their careers, putting their collective name to these new, widely affordable instruments. The reason lies at the door of one man: Fender Europe's Jamie Crompton.

"These guitars have been in development for well over a year now," explains Crompton. "The band have been involved every step of the way and when we launched the guitars at this year's Frankfurt trade show, the four guys came onto our stand and signed 450 flyers in 30 minutes! It's great for Fender to be associated with an undoubted hard rock legend."

Both guitars are Japanese in origin, which certainly goes some way to explaining the reasonable price tags (especially for the bass), and both instruments are loaded with only the best fixtures and fittings.

Obviously, the spec of the Harris bass is similar to his own instrument, but the guitar - there is only this single model at the moment - had to satisfy a trio of guitarists...
