Question involving models, hex editing, textures, and uti files.

Let me see if I can lay this out for y'all. I'm trying to make a new item using Mission's body model and a new texture. I've looked at related threads and I think I know what I need, that being the correct mdl and mdx files, a texture file, and a clothing uti. So far as I can gather I need to rename the model files and hex edit them so they are associated with the right model and texture names, and then it gets kind of cloudy. I've done this (probably incorrectly), I just don't know what to do with the UTI. Does that make sense?

 

I guess what I'm asking is how do I associate the UTI with the right model?

 

If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. :D
