EVE-Online: Rant/Review (Mostly Rant)

Well, I finally had it. It took longer this time, but I realize that EVE Online is just too much ****ing work, and very little fun. I'm sure a lot of EVE players love playing and have fun, but I just can't get into the groove.

I've played EVE-Online on and off a total of three times. First was during either a Beta or Free Trial when it first came out. Second was about 2004/5 when I played a free trial and then paid for a month or two. Lastly, I've been playing for a couple of months now **** almost half a year. 15$ x 6.

First experience in EVE-Online:

Don't remember much. It was a Beta or Trial. I do remember there was a lot of mining. I lost interest or something.

Second Experience:

I played a trial around 2004 or 2005. Somehow I got into it and extended my trial into a paid subscription. I played for a month and got bored again.

Current Experience:

I came across some ads for EVE on Penny-Arcade, and became interested again. I researched what had changed since I last played, watched some videos, and started jonesing for some internet spaceships.

I reactivated my account, liquidated all my assets on my character from '04 and transferred it to my newly created character. Unlike my previous playthroughs, I joined a player corporation this time. Right from the start, it was much more entertaining. They hooked me up with free stuff to get my character going.

<Tangent> Skill training is different in EVE than other games. Instead of killing a bunch of pigs to get experience, you buy skill books and spend time to "level up" your skills. There are many skills and they all have various training times. Training times are influenced by your attributes. </Tangent>

It was fun for the first few months. I did some shooting, mining, trading, and exploding. Being in a player Corporation/Alliance is much more fun than trying to solo in the game.

And I finally lost interest. The game requires too much work to be fun. Ships and weapons cost money. To get money, you have to work doing some mining, ratting (shooting NPC ships for bounty), agent missions, or be a really rich spacejew. The number of times I've been in PvP combat can be counted on one hand.

Final Words:

EVE-Online is unlike any MMO out there.

Allow this picture to illustrate:

There is a steep learning curve for new players. Unless you're in a noob friendly corp, you're going to have a bitch of a time trying to play. I will say that the game looks a lot better than the last time I played it. They released a "Premium Graphics Package" that makes the game prettier.

Looking back, I wish I didn't waste my time and money on this game. And I still have two months left on my subscription. x.x

If anyone is thinking about playing EVE-Online. Play the 14 day trial, and join a player corporation. Otherwise, you're not gonna have fun.

I think I'll try to sell my character for cash. Maybe get back some wasted money.

If anyone has any questions about EVE, just ask. I'll try to answer them.
