Things done out of order in Rubacava

Instead of gauging my eyes out from not knowing what to do I read the walkthrough and it says I need to flatter Nick and then threaten to tell Maximo blahbalhdjf. Well, not knowing this I've sassed him instead and now it's at the point where he won't talk to me anymore, so now I don't know how to get the cigarette case. Do I need to start all this Rubacava bidniss all over again?

you should be able to get the case, LucasArts games don't have dead ends like most hostile adventure games do. At some point he should leave his table, though you may have to make progress on something else before he leaves. Have you been able to get a union card or a spot on the boat yet?
