TheDirective
I've downloaded mods but never made any. Finally I've got KotOR to work on my computer, so now I'd like to try my hand at moding it. I need careful instruction though on how to get started. As even the simplest task for you, will feel like being thrown in the deep end for me. At the moment, I use a mod where Trask gives you Revan's Robes (Hooded with a removable mask) its great! Though I'm a bigger fan of canon, so I'm interested in creating mods which to me, make sense. So... here's what I want to do... Basically, I'd like to create a new quest on Dantooine, which can be taken after the PC trains as a Jedi. A summary of this quest would involve speaking to various NPCs in or around the Enclave, if I could add one or two NPCs of my own, this would be very cool. I'll need to be able to add and edit questions and responses between the PC and NPCs, including sound, whether alien or sampling human dialogue to make new dialogue etc. Anyway back to the quest... the general idea for the it would be for the PC to learn about what happened to Revan's robes after the Sith Lord "died". And by the end of the quest discover their fate, thus location within the academy (probably kept hidden in a locked footlocker somewhere). So that the PC can in a canonical way obtain Revan's Robes (Hooded with a removable mask like in the Trask mod). One minor thing I'd like to do is to have the robes without a DS restriction too. In brief, I need to know how to add / edit things like dialogue, items, item storage units, NPCs, the quest and it's changing description / details, add reward XP - quest points if possible, remove a DS restriction and write my own description for Revan's Robes so that it makes sense regarding this quest. If anyone out there could explain how I could do all of these things, I would be really grateful! Because I am an absolute novice and need direction with modding. I don't know which tools I need or would use for what, etc. or where to get them. And I wouldn't know how to use them. I apologise in advance if I find it hard to understand things at first, because this is all completely new to me, but I am eager to learn!
Godric Volturi
Well it wouldn't really be canon because the canon story is this... "The Council destroyed the robes, fearing their dark power." So therefor if the Sith Lord had a second set of robes, it wouldn't be on Dantooine... Korriban or Kashyykk maybe, but not on Dantooine. However, such a mod is quite possible, though it would take time to create. If you would like to do it yourself, then allow me to point you to the subforums in Holowan Labs. They have amazing tutorials that will allow you to do this. May the Force be with you. (lol)
TheDirective
Naa, I did know about that, thanks. In the quest I was going to have the council lie about it, directly, if possible. But its for the PC to find out the "truth" about Revan's armour. Personally I'd find it more believable than it just appearing somewhere as a loot. Thanks for pointing me towards the subforums, by the way. I do want to spend time on this and create the mod myself. But I was hoping for someone to directly explain what tools I would need for which part of the mod, where to get them from... I know it probably sounds very simple to you, but for me this whole modding "art" if you will, is completely alien to me. So I would really appreciate if someone could help me out there. You might also think I sound quite lazy for not just going to the subforums. But the point of this thread is that there is a community out there, who can bring me up to speed, rather than me spending a long time locating myself what I need, when it could be briefly explained. I wouldn't expect you make a tutorial personally for me, that's defeatist and pointless. Just drop me a link for which room the goodies are in, instead of vaguely saying, well, they're somewhere in that house over there. I really hope I don't sound rude in any way... by the way. I'd just like some help finding out what's what. Because I'm clueless. Maybe you misunderstand that, but I didn't think it too much to ask from someone. Thanks. Godric Volturi
Well... I would do this personally to help you, but I've already taken on an "apprentice" modder. Haha... he's going at a very fast rate, but I will never do this again. I will never teach someone to mod... it's rather frustrating... because sometimes he doesn't understand... umm... give me a few minutes and I'll give you the page for the tools... as for the rest... I'm not 100% positive of what you want, so you'll have to surf the sub forums to find out. >.> TOOLS
TheDirective
Ahh... I do appreciate your help... but I was just hoping for someone to reply with a sentence of what exactly I need to do what. I've been trying to make that seem clearer... I've already seen the page with tools... its quite confusing. Because it says, you'll need "this software" to edit "these files". I don't know what "those files" are... what aspect of the game they correlate to, etc. So I don't understand how to remove a restriction for instance, because I have no idea what files you edit for that... =( Sorry to mess you about if that's what it feels like... This is really what I'm looking for in an answer: In order to create a new quest, you need "this software" to edit "these files". Before you can edit "these files" you need to get it by doing "this". *And then if you could explain what "these files" actually are, just a brief sentence will do.* Here's a "link" you can follow to find a download. In order to edit dialogue use the "software" found "here". And so on... I hope I finally make sense. Again I'm very sorry for my utter noobness! Templates - Used to determine the properties of items, characters, and placeables. Edit and save with KotOR Tool: .uti - Item Template .utc - Character Template .utp - Placeable Template Scripts - Write in notepad/wordpad/other word processor, save as .nss and compile. .nss - Source Code .ncs - Compiled Code Dialog - Extract with KotOR Tool, edit with TK102's editor. .dlg - Dialog File I'm not familiar with journal entries, but if you familiarize yourself with these you'll be able to make the meat of this mod, if nothing else. All of the tools I mentioned are available at SWK by clicking the banner at the top of the page.
