Vandervecken
I just finished Grim Fandango for the first tmie, really enjoyed it. One plot point I never quite ironed out though. After Manny tears the ship in half, how does he know where to go to find the Pearl, and how did he even hear of the Pearl in the first place? Maybe I missed something? MeddlingMonk
Manny knows about the Pearl the same way Salvador and Chepito do, I imagine. Going by Chepito's remarks, the Pearl is a semi-legendary feature of the Sea of Lament and it's glow is supposed to have lured sailors to their doom (I would guess by being devoured by sea demons after they dive in). So, like the Bermuda Triangle or Shangri La, everyone in the Land of the Dead has probably heard about the Pearl. Some believe it exists, others don't, but either way people generally have a rough idea of where it's supposed to be. Manny seems to have a chart showing the Pearl's location, and the LSA's Puerto Zapato agent seems to know for certain that Meche went overboard at the Pearl, so at least some people know or think they know the exact location. Chepito, at least, thinks the Pearl can be seen from passing ships. Is the Pearl normally on sea charts? If not, did Manny mark the location of the glow when the Lola passed by earlier? At the very least, I think the game makes it fairly clear that the Pearl is something people just know about although maybe not clearly enough to be obvious after a single playing.
