november
Apologies in advance if this has already been asked; the only keywords I can think to use in searches for this question are "script" and "compile," which are less than helpful for this case! Here's my dilemma: I'm hoping to create a master document of dialogue exchanges from KotOR II (i.e., one that accounts for both the Exile's unspoken lines and the voiced lines by other characters). Ideally, this would be readable in .txt format (or .doc, or .html - anything that I could toss into Microsoft Word and start formatting like a movie script). I've seen various dialogue editing tools out there, but as in this case I want to a) extract the whole game dialogue set, not just single lines at a time, and b) grab the Exile's unvoiced exchanges in the mix, I can't tell whether there are any (still-available) modding tools which would let me do this. An extra complication is that I have Stoney's Restored Content Mod installed, if that happens to interfere with older tools somehow. Can anyone help me out here? I'm sure I can't be the only one to have attempted this... right?
VarsityPuppet
Uh, may I ask just exactly what you're going to do with all of these lines and replies? Either way, you're going to need a handy lil tool called Kotor Tool. This will cover the basics of Kotor Modding. From there, open up the Dialog.tlk via the Tools option, click File, choose Kotor II Dialog.tlk and that should get you there. That will show you every (if not, almost all of) the string references used in the game. It won't, however, tell you who said what. For that, you'll want to look in each individual Rim and open up the dialog files.
november
Thanks... that unfortunately confirms my worries that this will be complicated, but at least now I have a starting point. Sigh. None of this is for any kind of shady purpose, I swear; I just have very fond memories of this game, and want a way to preserve some of the 'teaching' and endgame dialogues between Kreia and the Exile without having to fight through the entire game to get there. Especially now that technology is marching forward and it's becoming harder to get these old games running on new hardware (goodness knows it took me about three hours to figure it out on my Vista laptop, and even that device is on its last legs now), I feel like it's worth putting in a bit of extra time storing these dialogues now so I can have them for *reading* reference later - and the story always was what I loved most about the KotOR series, after all. Hope that clarifies things a bit?
VarsityPuppet
Yes, you unfortunately have a lot of work ahead of you. I was just wondering because I think there are a couple of people who are trying to make a Kotor 'movie' and well, honestly, this would seem like a fairly inefficient way to do it... but that's not what you're doing anyways My apologies.
