Cannot save game

I have the public domain edit (not really sure what that means) of the monkey island games for PC. I use F5 to get to the save screen but when i type in a name and click save it says that the game was NOT saved.

 

can anyone tell me why and if and how i can get it saved. i have downloaded Scummvm but that hasn't helped.

Simply buy a new PC and leave it on with Monkey Island running permanently. If you have a power failure, shoot yourself.
