I've seen alot of people saying that on any difficulty level above moderate, the computer "cheats". What do they mean? Is it just that the computer is real good on hard and hardest?

Yup yup. Here's some nice detective work done by IdLe_WorkeR that definitively proves it to those of us who can't understand all that AI scripting stuff:

The computer player in random game mode, difficulty hard, is given 500 extra resources each carbon, food, nova, ore every 10 minutes. To prove this to yourself, watch a recording from the computer's point of view. Between 9:59 and 10:01, you'll see all the resources increase by 500!

And yes, this is in part to make up for the fact that humans can think outside the box and do things like pull ambushes and surprises on the computer. On the other hand, I think some of the AI in AoE and its derivatives (of which GB is one) could have been handled a bit better. On another thread (which, I don't recall at the moment) someone suggested the game writers actually sit and watch how the really good players, who often win in multiplayer games, run their civilizations, and try to program in response to that. I don't know if they have ever tried this or even thought of it, but it'd probably help a great deal. It would hopefully mean less cheating, and therefore a more satisfying victory. There's something hollow about knowing you only lost because the other guy cheated, or only won because he's so bad that he didn't cheat, and he can't win without cheating. On the other hand, I don't think any AI algorithm will ever be able to win against humans, because AIs cannot do creative problem-solving, and humans can.

Another "cheat" they use is multi-tasking. This is considered a cheat because they do something that no human could possibly do, that is, controll multiple units on different parts of the map at the same time. Do you ever wonder how they build buildings and build units and bring on multiple attacks at the same time? Its called multi-tasking. In other words, the computer is not confined to simply what you can see or do on a screen with one mouse pointer.

At least, i think they do this, and every game i play i observe them doing multiple things at a time.

They cheat like crazy on hard or hardest. Like TIE GUY said, they can do everything at once and we cant...A flaw in ourself obviously;) . oh well. They do cheat bad though....I get my butt kicked sometime on hardest... It is so much fun though!:p
