Random crashes

Has anybody experienced random 'crashes' mid-way through a game? The program just exits with no error code or message. This has happened to me about 3 times since I've had the game, about a couple of weeks. AOK has run fine for years without any crashes or problems.:(

Yup, and you can guarantee that it will be the time when you have forgotten to save for the past 2 hours

is was a sign that I had a bad memory module in my PC. Took me four weeks to discover that little fact! All summer, I'd had a crash in AoC every couple of weeks, then right around when I installed the demo of SW:GB, things got really bad. Finally, the utility available from the URL below tested my Ram, discovered the bad module. 128mb cost me $16.70 or something, fixed problem, no problems since! :-))

I have played 5 hours non stop without any problems what so ever.

I keep my hard drive very clean and watch what kinds of apps and progs I install. Somtimes its as simple as defragging the hard drive. Delete any large files ya dont need.

It could be a memory problem.

Video card problem. If you have less than a 32 mb then you might want to turn down the game detail.

Are you running anything else at the same time?

:boushh:

LucasArts' GB support page lists several reasons for problems including:

Sound card compatibility/driver issues.

Video card compatibility/driver issues.

Not having enough system resources free.

You can usually update your drivers by using Windows update (Win 98/2000) or by going to the vendor's website. I just updated by Soundblaster 128 driver last night, though I'm darned if I can see any difference -- nor should I, with an AMD Thunderbird, I guess :D.

Another thing to do is go into settings --> control panel --> system, and check how much of your system resources are free. They recommend at least 80%, I think (or thereabouts). If you are running lots of other little things in the background, try quitting those, or even disabling their startup trigger, and rebooting the machine nice and clean. See if that doesn't free up some resources.

Finally, watch out for constantly running virus scans. I usually have mine run at boot time, but whenever I'm playing any game even midly serious in the system resources department, I always turn that off. Virus scanning programs are notorious for doing things to the system that cause other, resource-intensive programs, to crash or otherwise misbehave.

Hope one of those helps.
