WolfmanNCSU
I am currently taking a sweet new class at school called computer gaming design and development. The class totally rocks. We are mostly working with Unreal Tournament but throughout the course we are doing game reviews. The current game that I am reviewing is (of course) SWGB. So, I thought that it would be cool to get some input from the forum goers. This way, the review will have several different opinions, plus I hope it could lead to some great discussion on the board. The guide lines for the review are as follows... What are the machine requirements to play this game? Is the game easy to install? Is the game easy to learn? Is the game easy to play (friendly user interface)? Is the game interface user configurable? Who is the target audience for the game? Who might the game offend? What values does the game promote? Is the game educational? How novel is the game concept? How novel is the game implementation? What is the ``genre'' of the game? What type(s) of user interface does the game use? Is there a story line behind the game? Is it interesting? How well does it integrate into the game? Are there puzzles (mental challenges) in the game? Are they well designed? Are there levels of difficulty? How well do they integrate into the game? Is it a game of skill (motor challenges)? Are the challenges well designed? Are there levels of difficulty? How well do they integrate into the game? Would the game be fun to play more than once? Is the game continually interesting, or does it get tedious at times? What is the quality of the game graphics? What is the quality of the game animation? What is the quality of the game sound and music? Do they add or detract from the game? How well do they set moods? How well do they integrate into the game and story? Are there other agents in the game? Do they provide effective opponents or teammates? Is it a multiplayer game? Is the multiplayer interface effective? That's about it! Thanks for any input you give. Have fun!
Sithcloak
here are a few answers The game does have multiplayer and diffuclty levels (Easiast, Easy, Average, Hard, and Hardest). The Game is a realtime stragety game. You have to have at least 32 megabytes ram and 250 mhz processer other than that i do not know. The Challanges are challenging. The Game has Multiple storylines for the different campaigns Trade fed: your a Battle droid commander and you are to complete a series of missions to secure naboo. later into the campaign you have to defeat the gungan army. Bonus levels are taken from episode I and include the Final Battle between the trade fed and the gungans, it is a what if anikan did not destroy the control ship? Gungans: For the first few missions you have to defeat a rouge gungan boss, thousands of years before episode I. The later missions are from episode I. Galactic Empire: The Galactic empire campaigns start with a mission where you have to defeat the last group of rebels left on yavin 4. The next few missions take place on a planet that has been growing in rebel support, you have to wipe them out. One of the missions includes the battle of hoth. The bonus mission is the battle of endor. Rebel Alliance: I don't know much except that princess leia crashes on a planet that i don't know about ethier. Wookies: In this campiagn you have to free kashyykk from the empire and the Trandoshans. There is also a training campaign. a lot of this is probbly wrong. Chessack
Is the game easy to install? Yes. Is the game easy to learn? Yes Is the game easy to play (friendly user interface)? Yes Is the game interface user configurable? Not really. You pretty much are stuck with the interface it comes with. You can configure key bindings and whatnot, but the basic interface is always going to be the same. Who is the target audience for the game? Star Wars and RTS fans. Who might the game offend? I can't see it'd really offend anywone, though a few people have been annoyed that it is "too similar" to Age of Kings. What values does the game promote? None. It's a game. It's about having fun, not promoting "values." Is the game educational? Not really. It can't teach you anything important. It can teach you how to multi-task, a bit. But not much more. How novel is the game concept? Fairly non-novel. It's basically Age of Kings with a Star Wars overlay. Not that I'm complaining -- that is why I love it. But it's not new. How novel is the game implementation? Same as above. What is the ``genre'' of the game? Real Time Strategy/Sci-fi What type(s) of user interface does the game use? Mouse and keyboard (not sure if that's what you mean by this question). Is there a story line behind the game? Only the barest minimum of one, in the campaigns. So, not really. Is it interesting? Marginally. How well does it integrate into the game? Yes, but this is not a game about stories; it's a game about building a civilization and using your units to squash anothe civilization. Any story they add in is just icing, not cake. Are there puzzles (mental challenges) in the game? Not really. You don't have to solve murder mysteries or anything. Are they well designed? N/A Are there levels of difficulty? Yes. How well do they integrate into the game? How well do levels of difficulty integrate into the game? Not sure what this question means. There are several difficulty levels and they are each different in how hard they are. They all work fine as part of the game. Is this what you're asking? It seems a strange way to ask it. Is it a game of skill (motor challenges)? Skill and motor challengers are, in my opinion, antonyms, not synonyms. The answer is yes and no. Yes, it takes skill, to manage your resources, but no, it doesn't take much motor skill other than moving and clicking a mouse. It's not like X-wing or something, where you have to use a joystick. Would the game be fun to play more than once? I have played it many, many times. Yes. Is the game continually interesting, or does it get tedious at times? Continually interesting. What is the quality of the game graphics? Good, but not incredible. It's based on a 2 year old engine. What is the quality of the game animation? Same as above. What is the quality of the game sound and music? Same as above. Do they add or detract from the game? Add to it. How well do they set moods? Just fine. How well do they integrate into the game and story? Again, not sure what this question means. I don't understand how graphics can integrate into the game story. The graphics are the graphics; they will be as good as it is possible to make them, under various constraints. If you are asking whether the game needs different graphics to make it "feel right", the answer is no. It looks and feels just fine. Are there other agents in the game? Do you mean computer opponents? Yes. Do they provide effective opponents or teammates? Moderately so, yes. The computer's not brilliant but it's reasonably effective. Is it a multiplayer game? It can be, if you want. Is the multiplayer interface effective? I have not tried it, so I can't answer.
WolfmanNCSU
Thanks yall for posting. I know some of the questions dont make a lot of sense, but they are generic and have to fit all kinds of games. Plus they are just some sample questions to answer. WolfmanNCSU
I go to NC State and the class is CSC 495C, Computer Gaming Design and Development. Its the first time it has been offered here at this university. It may sound easy, but it really works with all the behind the scene stuff on how to make a computer game. The game reviews are just a very small part of the class that we continually do throughout the semester. The majority of the semester is dividing into groups of about 4 people, and actually making a game of whatever we like. Its based off the UT engine, mainly because Epic Games are doing some funding and research for the course, and they are located locally in Raleigh, NC. WolfmanNCSU
Oh yeah, BTW, I already turned in my review of the game today, and of course I gave it a good one. So you don't have to post answering the questions again, unless you want to keep talking about it, or questions about the gaming class. Thanks for posting your thoughts.
