Dark Jedi vs Sith + meaning of Darth

nJR Exar Kun

I have a feeling my original topic on this was lost in the server move, cause I cant find it. So I'll start it again.

- What's the main difference between a Dark Jedi and a Sith? I've heard that a Dark Jedi is just a Jedi who starts messing with the Dark Side of the Force, whereas a Sith goes through more formal training.

- What's the significance of having Darth in your name? Sidious and Vader were "Darth" and they were Dark Lords of the Sith. Maul was "Darth" and he was a Sith Apprentice. However, Exar Kun was a Dark Lord of the Sith, but he wasnt "Darth". Does it just show that the "Darth" people are ones who believe in the idea of Darth Bane that there can only be 1 master and 1 apprentice, whereas the others believe in mass-training?

Hehe, I'll explain again in case you didn't see it last time. Once again, I stress that I'm not a master of the Expanded Universe or some of the finer details of the Star Wars galaxy, but I'll try. ;)

I think you basically have it correct on both accounts. Dark Jedi are less organized and don't have formal training in the Dark Side, most likely. Rather, they're probably fallen Jedi that succumbed to the Dark Side. The Sith, on the other hand, are more organized and deal with the force almost as a religion (similar to the Jedi order--it has set rules, training, teachings, etc.). In the TPM novelization, there's a blurb between Sidious and Maul about the history and some of the finer points on the Sith order. You might want to check that out. And I'm sure there are other sources on the net.

And I would guess that Darth is sort of a title that indicates that you are a Dark Lord of the Sith. For example, we don't read Darth Jerec, because he wasn't a sith, but rather a Dark Jedi. Hope this helped a bit.

I think the real issue behind "Darth" is that Exar Kun was written into the EU before Lucas decided --or, for the less cynical, before he "revealed"-- that the word was a title and not part of Vader's name. :)

Only a master of evil, Darth.
