Rookie Server questions

Hey, I'm new to the world of creating a server.

My problem is that I create a server and when i hit BEGIN the consol window opens up adn everythings cool for a while. How do I play on my server. For example, I can log in if I open another JK2 window but that wont let me use the server admin controls and options, like changing maps and kicking players, etc. Because it says I have to be the server admin to do these things. But since the server is set up on my pc y cant i do these things?

So there must be a way I can play on my server without opening another JK2 window.

I know this is such a rookie question but I've never tried to create a server with the other games i have, RTCW, and MOHAA

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to all the people who read my post but didn't bother to reply. The fact that I'm a rookie isn't hidden and I admit it, so PLEASE someone help me.

Maybe I would feel a little better if I knew others were having the same problem.

Im a rookie to and I am having the same problems you described. Can you tell me what you did?

In the server menu before u hit begin, look at the dedicated server option. It should have a few choices

Lan

Internet

or NO

Choose NO

The dedicated server is an option if u want to run a game from your pc but not play. If you select NO this means u want to run a game but play also. LAN and INTERNET are choices of where u want to run the server but not play.

If you wanted - you can also run a dedicated sever... then a client and still have admin rights. You just have to set your rcon password in your server.cfg file.

 

Then you can have remote rights from wherever you are using your password.

Alright, now thats exactly what I'm looking for. Cause I always hated bootin people when I had to shut down How exactly do I do set the rcon password?

To set the rcon password for the server, put this in your server.cfg:

 

seta rconpassword "blah"

 

Just replace blah with your desired password. Then, after you connect with the client, drop down the console and type:

 

/set rconpassword blah

 

For the rest of the session, you can issue rcon commands without typing the password each time. Enjoy.

So the rconpassword thing works for changing levels

But when I try to kick a player it says

"Server is not running"

Even after I have entered the game and typed in the password.

But like I said I can change levels and all that so it knows that I have the password

Whats the deal?

What command are you using to try and kick players? If you're doing it via rcon it should look something like this:

 

/rcon kick playername

 

-or-

 

/rcon clientkick clientnumber

 

 

That assumes you have used:

 

/set rconpassword myrconpass

 

before hand. Kicking players with spaces in their name will only work if you use clientkick and the number.

I 2 am a rookie..... is there a complete list of console commands out there??? I have looked arround a little but couldnt find any.

Just type cmdlist into the server console and it'll pop up a list for you.
