Son of Skywalker

For years I've been wondering: why does the Emporer refer to Luke as "the son of Skywalker" in his conversation with Darth Vader in ESB, only for Vader to later reveal to Luke that he is his father?

Had Lucas not made his mind up as to whether Vader was lying or not at that time, hence the reason the Emporer to refer to Anakin in third person?

Also, as Lucas arsed around with the films anyway for the (superior) Special Editions, why didn't he replace the Emporer in ESB with Ian McDiarmid for continutities stake?

It will be interesting to see whether he goes back to the original trilogy after completing Episode III and adds more. What about Qui-Gon Jin as a ghost with Obi-Wan, Anakin and Yoda at the end of ROTJ.

I personally hope that he does. Since 1978 there has always been the possiblity of another Star Wars film, after Episode III it will be all over. A re-release of another rejigged original trilogy may be all you have to look forward to.

Episode III will herald the end of a era. The Star Wars saga will have finally ended.

What a vast emptiness.

What I meant, D.L., is the Emporer speaks of Anakin Skywalker (Vader) in the third person (i.e. son of Skywaker) when he is talking directly to Vader (Skywalker) about his son.

It's like Mrs D.L. refering to D.L. as son of Mr D.L. in a conversation with Mr D.L.

Ah right!!!

I supose when you think of it that way it is a bit weird but knowing the major spoiler for the end of the movie before hand is a bit odd.

Plus Vader himself said in Return of the Jedi, "That name no longer holds any meaning for me" so maybe he considered Anakin Skywalker a different person to himself, as Darth Vader!?

1.well, i think that vader consideres anakin skywalker indeed as antoher person. im not saying that he really thinks that anakin and vader are two different persons, but since he turned to the dark side and became darth vader, anakin skywalker, the person he was before, the jedi, died with most of the good in him.

hence its logical that he neglects his past, namely anakin and says that the name doesn't mean anything to him anymore

2.IMHO (i think i've heard something about it) the star wars saga wont be at an end after episode III, technically seen. i've heard that episodes VII, VIII and IX are planed or to be precise in big Gs head, but he said he will be too old after finishing episode III to make another trilogy.

shot me if i'm wrong, but i've heard so

I'm saying that there will be no Episodes after Episode 3 is done, because George Lucas said he isn't doing them, as he feels that they won't be any good and won't really contibute to the story.

Besides there is all that EU stuff with the books and novels

Palpatine was trying to keep things impersonal, IMO. Saying "let's kill the son of Skywalker" is less emotionally charged than "let's kill YOUR son." Palpatine probably felt it best to handle Darth Vader's emotions as delicately as possible, just in case his former self started to stir within him. And I have heard around the movie gossip sites that eventually McDiarmid WILL be put into ESB, as well as A New Hope, in a scene where you get to see him actually dissolve the Imperial Senate. Could be BS, but it'd be cool to see that happen, rather than just hear Tarkin mention it.
