Hi im just learning how to make a Jedi Outcast server. Im running the latest win32 binnary (But i still says 1.02a and not 1.02b, but this happens to other ppl as well) and im running the server on a win2k box p3 667, 256 megs of pc133 ram. When the server starts i get a hitch warning, but i guess that is normal. My problem is i cant get my server displayed on the master server list...here is my config.

i have changed the line

seta sv_master1 "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

to

seta sv_master! "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

and it still dident work....

Also is it ok to have my IP and port commented out? Or do i need to manually set it so my server can be view from the master server list?

If you know how to fix this, please ICQ or AIM me. my AIM is Nigg3rk and my ICQ is 153454466. You can also e-mail me at niggak@cox.net

i just got version c of the ded server and same problem.

this is the command line I am using

"\\Aoc\aocc\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2Ded.exe" +sv_maxclients 12 +set dedicated 2+exec server.cfg

one thing i did notice this time is that when i am at the in game server browser and switch from internet to local it shows up. This is when i am on a computer on the same university network. I will check at home and see it shows up in the internet list.

the server name is H3LL ----- ........

ip is 130.85.87.50:28070

i can add it manually to internet list but am curious if anyone gets this when they request a new server list using in game server browser. I would appreciate any response, ty

unless this is a typo.... you need to put a space between your +set dedicated 2 and your +exec server.cfg also add a set net_port 28070, this is how mine is set and fires right up.

So it should read:

"\\Aoc\aocc\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2Ded.exe" +set net_port 28070 +sv_maxclients 12 +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg +set net_port 28070

made that fix and still not getting it show on the ingame server browser.

I tried looking for it at home, and it would not show up.

From a computer on the same network it shows up under local still. appended to the server name is [uDP]

does this UDP mean anything in particular??

First, I'd like to say that the in-game browser is no something you should rely on to make sure the server is reporting to the master server. It could be that the in-game browser does not report it specifically because it considers it a "Local" game.

You should see this :

Sending heartbeat to masterjk2.ravensoft.com

in your console.

I believe there is a command to increase the heartbeat rate, but you really shouldn't need it.

I also do not know what port the JK2 server sends it's heartbeat to or from. It could be possible that if it is not the same as the gameservers port (28070) that a firewall on your network has that port blocked.

Lastly, try an external game browser such as GameSpy or ASE. Both have a free version and both are far superior to the in-game browser.

you are probabley correct that a machine on a local system will see an internet server as local, but it still doesnt show up on the gamebrowser without a manual addition on other computers.

I just wanted to get traffic in the server....

I've found a few things over the years the universally help increase game server traffic. Here's a short list:

Get a group of friends to play on the server regularly. The average player doesn't join an empty (or near empty) server. After a while, you should get enough regulars that you don't need to be on it as much yourself.

Treat the good players on your server well. Don't kick people because they frag you or even if they gloat a bit about it. Your reputation as an admin counts.

Boot disruptive players fast--especially if you have voting disabled. There's nothing that'll empty out a server faster than a couple of jerks ruining the fun for everyone else. Disruptive behavior includes: intentional teamkilling, excessive swearing or whining, flag squaters.

Have some way to provide player stats. People want to see how they are doing. Some games have 'em built in. If they're not, get a hold of a good package and use it. Make sure the players know where they can view the stats via the MOTD or some other means.

Make the game type/rules obvious from the server name. Most players are looking for a particular game type (FFA/CTF/Duel) with certain rules (No Force/Saber Only/FF On). If it just says, "JK2 Dedicated Server" players aren't as likely to try that server first. Especially when there are other servers called, "CTF Saber Only" or "FFA Duels On|No Force". They want to find a server quickly and get to playing....not check the server info to figure out what it is.

Try not to change settings too much. Once you get some regular players, it's not going to make them happy if you're constantly changing the settings/rules. They come to your server because they expect it to be the same every time--or at least close. Just remember the next comment too.

Pay attention to what players say about the server. Sure, a few will always complain about something. However, if you are hearing the same complaint over and over, you need to do something about it. If it has to do with the timelimit on a map or the maps in the rotation, or such, give it some thought. If you think that Saber Only/No Force/FF On is the way the game should be played, stick to your guns. Just remember that some settings are less popular and you may be catering to a niche player group.

Keep quality regular players by offering them access to the private game slots. Most admins setup a few private slots for themselves and some friends. While you're playing on your server (or from watching the stats/logs) when you find a good, regular player that helps other players out instead of just *****ing at them and just makes the game more fun for everyone...give them the private slot pass. You want these players to be able to get on your server whenever they want. Do this even if it means making less public spots.

Those are all the basics that come to mind right away. Additional comments and suggestions are always welcome since I'm sure there are plenty of admins that could use them.

  • 2 months later...

As usual MatrixCPA's words of wisdom ring true. Perhaps i should follow these suggestions so i lose the nickname of "JOSEPH STALINS MEMORIAL COMMUNIST ADMIN":D

Seriously one thing I'd add is try to keep the same IP & Port.

I have/Had about 15 regulars give or take.... But when I installed 1.04 I had to change ports to get the server to reappear on the in game browser. So Far about 7 of my regulars have reported in. I've ran u1.04 code since its release so I know that converting to the official 1.04 didnt scare them off. I'd like to think that they just are too lazy to try to figure out why their favorites dont work now...:o:D
